When to change transmission fluid?

I have a 2015 GLK350 with 48K miles on it. The manual says to change the tranny oil and filter at 77.5K miles or every 5 year (engine type 276). I read some owners have changed it at 30-40K. Should I change the oil and filter now for the sake of maintenance?

The interval used to be 40k, but they moved to 70k in 2013. Follow your scheduled maint for your vehicle and you should be fine.

It can't hurt to do it early, but use the correct fluid and set the level correctly, it matters more than it should.

Yep, 70k miles. Just had ours done yesterday. Dealer wanted almost $700 and I got it done at Certified Transmission for $300 and they use genuine MB parts and fluids. Very reputable shop in business for 37 years. I got to see them do the whole thing and they even let me in the shop to see the transmission after they dropped the pan.

If they used genuine MB fluids, the fluid runs about $22 a liter, if they drained the TQ it should have needed roughly 9-10 liters for fill before back draining... so about $200 in fluid plus $30 for filter and the pan bolts since the pan bolts may not be reused. how did they do this for $70?

Not that I need to explain my bill but here it is.
6 quarts fluid $157.50
Filter and gasket $42.00
Labor $75.95
Tax $26.10
Total $301.55

no one around here drains a torque converter

What does the maintenance manual say concerning draining the torque converter?

ehhh, that explains it, they did a half *** job. and likely reused the bolts as you weren't billed for them, they are one time use aluminum stretch bolts.

most of the fluid is inside the torque converter. it is part of the procedure as outlined by MB to complete the job properly. it is very easy to do, it's just one additional plug, and an additional 4-5 liters or so.

I got quotes from 2 different independent shops, neither one of them drain the torque converter. And most of the fluid is not in the converter, it's about 60% in the transmission and 40% in the torque converter give or take. They put in 6 quarts or liters, what ever in the hell it is. As far as reusing the bolts, maybe they did, I don't know. As far as a half *** job, I don't think so. Maybe 3/4 of an *** job. Either way, I'm happy with their work and I knew going in they weren't draining the torque converter and I'm fine with that.
