2013 GLk 350 Engine Rattle
Hi Everyone,
I just recently purchased a 2013 GLK350 4Matic with about 50k miles. Everything felt/sounded good when I test drove it, but recently I have noticed that during a cold start I hear a rattle/clank noise under for hood. I've searched the forums and it seems like this may be the secondary timing chain tensioner problems the earlier M276 engines were having. I only get the rattle during the first few seconds when the engine is started.
I was going to take it back to CarMax since my 30 day warranty is still active, but I'm a bit worried that they wont fix it right since this isnt a normal problem.
Would I be better off just having the dealer do the fix so that i can be done right? Or has anyone attempted to the fix themselves? I've seen a video posted on youtube and it doesnt seem that hard.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Its a very straight forward fix, although not that simple. If you were to do it yourself you will need special tools such as a torque wrench and E-torx sockets. I actually had this cold start noise as well, but it went away after I did my most recent oil change (owned GLK since March 2017).

Thanks for the post Mmri. Thats the same bulletin I've been looking at.
I was also thinking the same thing about CarMax. I just dont think they will service the car right. I'm gonna call the dealer next to my house and find out how much it will cost. I'm just barely outside my warranty too, so I wonder if they will cut me some slack and give me goodwill repair.

For sure, I'll let everyone know what they say. Mine pretty much does it whenever I start the car after it sits for a while. Mercedes apparently have good sound deadening material because I only noticed it when the window was down. Cant really hear it when I start it with the windows up.

So I got my GLK back from the dealer today and they said everything is fine. They had it for about 2 full days starting and testing the engine. They checked for any software updates, and any performance issues with the engine. Apparently the noise im hearing is the direct injection system. I agree that im not use to the noises of a direct injection engine ( ive only ever owned hondas and acuras), so maybe they are correct.
I may get a second opinion after i drive it some more. Although, they said my vin didnt bring up any technical service bulletins and everything was ok.

The only time I hear the noise is when it’s real warm out in summer, not now in fall. I don’t hear it on first startup. I must drive it till it’s fully warmed up, Park it for about 30minutes, then On startup it rattles for 3- 5 seconds.
