GLK250BT Adblue TEMP Sensor
We have this 2014 GLK 250BT bought brand new and now is under 70KM. The yellow engine light came on last week and the dealer checked saying the temp sensor in adblue tank has a short circuit with code 205C16. The car is still running seems normal, but on one trip on highway, it came out a large amount of blue smoke. It stopped after we got off the road. The dealer also warned it needs to be fixed with a new Adblue tank otherwise the car won't start in winter (we are in Canada) for $2200+.
Is TEMP sensor the similar function as NoX sensor as I saw some discussions around that topic? Also is the maintenance at 65KM cost $1200 normal? The maintenance was done three months before this trouble so no early sign of the sensor failure could be detected? Wondering if anyone here had experienced the same problem and can share with us.
If the AdBlue temp sensor is indeed bad, you may need an entirely new DEF tank installed as the temperature and level sensors is internal to the tank.
It's actually a module that is inside the DEF tank, almost like a fuel pump assembly, except the pump is at the top of the assembly.
What you need, most likely: Part# 204-471-05-75 and it's about $890. Most dealers will want to replace the entire DEF tank since it comes with a new temp and level sensor assembly, hence the $2200+
The AdBlue temp sensor is used to preheat the DEF fluid when it's freezing out. If it doesn't work, the DEF may crystallize and your emissions equipment (DPF particularly) may be compromised.
If the AdBlue system is compromised, it will give you a warning of "10 starts remaining" but this is to protect the DPF, it has nothing to do with the engine not being able to start in winter.
