2013 GLK Steering Column Melting

38,000 miles. Vehicle is garage kept 95% of the time. However, about a month ago I noticed the steering column bubbling up. I intentionally left it out of the garage about an hour and when I got in and touched the column it was mushy like Silly Putty. WHAT THE WHAT? Mercedes isn't built for hit climates? Not to mention the column is melting down over the knee air bag! Isn't that a safety issue?

I can only guess there is an electrical short in the column. It could have been close to an electrical fire.

That is truly bizarre. Those pieces are hard plastic on my 2015 and no signs of softening or bubbling.

That *might* be explained by heat generated in the column, but I would expect you to notice that heat and and it should also effect more of the surrounding plastics.

It could also be some sort of chemical reaction, but again I would expect to see more collateral damage.

I looked at mine and as Bjnarp said , they don’t look original. I take back what I said about an electrical issue and overheating . That stuff is not what my 2013 has.

This is my 13

My '14 does not have that bubbling up stuff either, and what you're seeing is NOT normal.

First time I've ever seen something like that, TBH.

I just discovered the same problem with my 2012. Only the hard plastic is melted, the flexible vinyl material that attaches to it is perfect.
All electronics work perfectly and I never smelled anything like burning plastic. Very strange, the plastic has obviously melted at same point, but now it is hard and brittle. When I adjust the steering column angle, bits break off and fall on the floor.

Did you try to fix it

I'm curious to know if you tried to fix it. If so, how? Thanks.

MB’s of all kinds.
Nothing like that on my 2015 GLK. That part does not even look MB.

I have (2) GLKs with the same issue- did you find a replacement part?

Geez this is very odd. Checked my GLK's (2010) and nothing at all looking like white plastic around the steering area at all.

Have the same problem in my daughter’s 2012 GLK350. Anyone have luck with a part number?

I was curious so just took a look at my car and it has a white plastic ring around the steering column. I have white interior so maybe that is the reason.

LOL my steering wheel has been jammed in the up position since my granddaughter played with the controls. Today I gave it one more hard tap and it works.

i discovered this is the flexible faux leather material that wraps around the steering column. We have never had any electrical/overheating issue to cause it to shrink up in what appears to look melted. What it looks like now is not even close to what the flexible material is like (think the “bag” that goes around the transmission shifter). Long story short, I have ordered “steering column cover” in black, and that should do that trick. Part 20468073089051
