Two cars, one key?

Any idea if I can program the GLK to accept the key from the GLS? The GLS has power tailgate and Keyless Go; the GLK does not. Sure would be nice if I could drive either one with one key in my pocket.

(I know the emergency key would not work...)

TIA

So, if I loose the key, I have to buy a new car?

Is the coding in the key, or in the car?

New key fobs have to be coded to the car, based on the VIN. I was just perusing the FCPEuro site and saw the tool used for that purpose is $1400.

Specifically to answer your question, one key fob can ONLY be coded to ONE vehicle at a time. You can code as many key fobs as you want for that car, but ONLY that car.

that's not entirely true. there is a limit to how many keys can be coded to the car. i believe it is 5

But how would the key know it was coded to more than one car, and how would the car know the key was also coded to the other car?

Unless they talk to each other in the driveway.

I'm assuming there is something like an RFID chip in the key that in the GLK allows the key to turn the switch and in the GLS allows the push button to work. If you have Keyless Go you probably know that you can remove the button and use the key exactly as you can in the GLK. Seems to me (If they're compatible) you (or the dealer) could program the GLK to accept the GLS key and the key and GLS would be none the wiser. Bonus points if the lock and unlock buttons also work.

Sure would be convenient...

It just doesn't work that way. Yes, it might be convenient but safety and security is more important.

So, if I loose the key, and get a new one, what gets programmed, the key to match the car, or the car to accept the new key? If it's the latter, how does anyone know the key doesn't already work in another car?

I believe it’s both. The new/replacement key is coded to the VIN and the car’s locking/security ECU is linked to the new key.

And yes, the key fob and car “talk” to each other if in range, if the car is not locked.

You can actually have one key start both cars......... but central locking will not work for both at the same time. For example, my wife has a W212 and I have a W203. I programmed both EIS's with the data from the W212. Now, if both cars are unlocked, I can insert the key and start both cars with no problem. But central locking (lock/unlock/panic) will only work on the last car the key was used on. One last thing, to clarify...... both vehicles have to be FBS3 systems.
