Key Fob not recognized when inserted - GLK 350

Hello all,

I've had my 2014 GLK 350 for a few years and never experienced anything like this. I parked outside of my house and when I inserted my key fob to start the engine nothing happened at all. The key fob opens the doors and trunk, but when I turned the ignition a few times I got this message on my dash:
Remove 'Start' Button and Insert Key. I've never had a Start button and have always used my key fob. Nothing else on the dash or anything on the display comes on. No radio either. When I turn the ignition I don't even get a click sound. I changed the battery in the key fob just to make sure but nothing changed. I tried jumping the battery just in case but nothing changed. I only have the one key fob.

Please advise.

Thanks,

Jeff

Are you confident you don't have KEYLESS-GO ? All searches about this turn up with folks who have KEYLESS-GO.

Is it possible that the car's programming glitched and now THINKS it has keyless-go enabled? Might be a good idea to scan it (not sure which tool(s) would show that option - or enable changing it back).

It's most likely the steering lock. It happened to me. You insert the key and it turns but it does not do anything. check if you hear the noise when you try to start the vehicle. If you don't it's the steering lock.

All feedback is great, and appreciated ... I'm a bit confused though - you state a possible cause, but offer no solution options.

Are you stating the steering lock is jammed, and simply moving the steering wheel an inch or so , left or right, will solve it ? ...

Or are you suggesting the steering lock mechanism is no good and may require replacement ?

The steering lock has a little motor inside that goes bad over time. It's a known issue. The motor itself costs like 10 bucks. Loo it up on you tube and you'll see what I'm talking about. When the motor goes bad the steering lock will not send the signal to the computer to let you start your vehicle

Most likely the ESL mechanism, which I thought was not as prone to failure in later models. One more thing to keep an eye on...

Yes the dealer had quoted me about $2000 DLLs. However you can do this yourself but it is quite a little hard. I did it myself and it took me a couple of hours. Rule of thumb is if the steering is locked and you can't turn it then it failed.in the lock position. If you can turn the steering wheel then it failed.in the open position. If it failed in the open position it is easier to fix as mine failed.in the open position. But if it fails in closed position then you have to take out the steering column. Check out the you tube videos on it to see if you can do it yourself.

You are 100% correct. It definitely should be a recall. Too many of these vehicles have this issue!!!
