Engine makes popping sound then smokes happens
Hi all,
Is anyone familiar or has this happen to them? My engine has made a popping/firecracker sound when I unlock the car and them smoke appears. It smells like exhaust. This usually happens when the engine is still warm. I just had the intake hose/manifold replaced after the code P2279 came up on an ODB II scanner. This popping sound happened twice before the manifold was replaced and it just happened again after the manifold replacement. What's going on? My car has 151K miles.

I don’t understand, your inside , you open the door , then it Pops? Or your outside a running vehicle and you unlock the door ? What does the code scanner say ? Where is the smoke ? How does it drive ?

Twice the popping sound occurred when I unlocked the car with my key fob. The 3rd time occurred spontaneously in my garage. I heard something pop from upstairs, went down stairs and the garage was filled with smoke. It smelled like burnt plastic and exhaust. All my warning lights are not lit after I took it for a test drive around the block afterwards. I wonder if the issue is the muffler or catalytic converter? It's really freaking me out.

Wake up, it happened by itself once ? Something electrical is fried or frying . A fire could happen at any time . You did say once it happened by itself ! If it was me I’d buy a fire extinguisher and drive to my mechanic .

Check the battery connections and the connections to the jump points. It sounds like you might have a loose connection somewhere. And yes, don't put it inside until you figure out what's going on!

I'm not sure where the smoke originates from. It usually comes out out the engine bay when I open the hood. I checked for leaks. Nothing. Just drove the car to work, a 15 mile trek and nothing. The car works fine. I am going to call the dealer to run a diagnostic test. The local dealership is having a $149 diag promo. I suspect it has something to do pressure or vacuum line.
I have yet to check the battery terminal. Will do shortly.
