Hey everyone, does anybody have experience with doing a full transmission fluid and filter change? The filter or fluid has never been changed and I heard that it make things worse if I change it. It's catching a bit late going from 2-3 and something 3-4. I was quoted 50 bucks for the filter and for the fluid itself, 30 for oem and 10-15 for non. Would I need 9 or 10 gallons for a complete flush? Or at this point, should I even do one? I planning to keep the car for another 2 years and I put around 9k on it last year. Any advice would greatly help!

I would replace the fluid and filter.

When I did my 722.964 trans I simply removed the pan, replaced the filter, installed a new pan due to the old pan rusting, then filled it back up. The fluid looked ok in my opinion so I didnt bother draining the TC. I did buy extra fluid and new TC drain plug in case I felt the need to drain it.

Just draining it from the pan I used 6 liters to fill it back up. I used an OE Filtran filter and Shell brand fluid. Installed new pan bolts, torqued to spec, and used my obd scanner to fill it to the proper level.

The OP has gotten some fairly bad info (9 or 10 gallons???).

FWIW, here's a video I did on the process, showing you everything you need (including fluid - I suggest OEM fluid - that's one thing I tend to never compromise on, assuming that the manufacturer of the transmission knows best how to keep it running for the longest possible service life)... I include all the info you need in the video description (click on the video title in the box below to access the description)...

And no, you won't hurt a transmission doing a fluid change. It is theoretically possible for it to nudge an already damaged transmission into failure, but if it does that tranny was a goner anyway. A transmission fluid change is the best thing you can do to a car with an automatic transmission to keep it on the road for many more years.

1) LOL, do not let who ever did that quote touch your vehicle.
2) Do not use Shell branded fluid UNLESS It is the proper SPEC: 236.14
But call Mercedes and CONFIRM the SPEC

APPROVED OILS:
https://operatingfluids.mercedes-benz.com/sheet/236.14

If you cant do it yourself, Mercedes or a proper EURO shop will do it but It will be about 500-800$

Ya get it changed, 126K miles is a lot with the old fluid.

Im guessing a 2012 has the A89 Option code for the trans. If so you would want to use 236.15 spec.

Confirm this on your build sheet.

This has to be a troll , if not get you oil and filter at FCP euro , you will get what’s right. It cost me about 270. So for your 50 bucks it must not be changed or just a scam

There definitely a lot of bots on the forums lately, let's give OP the benefit of doubt and perhaps came here legitimately don't know.

I'm assuming OP means 9-10 liters. 50$ for a filter, 30$ for a one liter bottle of mercedes transmission fluid. 10-15$ for a one liter bottle of aftermarket equivilent.

THANKS for all the replies! I work for a used auto dealership so I get discounts on parts. I ended up getting a 5qt. jug of Pentosin ATF 134 FE, transmission oil pan gasket (23 bucks for OEM), Transmission filter OES, a new Overflow plug (the green one that goes inside the the pan), ATF fill adapter from Amazon M12 x 1.5, all in all Im spending 130 for everything and the labor for my work place is going to be another 100 something, Getting done this week, will repost once its finished.

You're going to need another jug of fluid, and new (aluminum) bolts for the pan. They're single use only. Also, a torque converter drain plug.

How are you going to measure transmission temp when you fill it ? That’s a must

New transmission pan bolts would be a good idea. Also want a new drain plug washer, its a 12mmx17mmx1.5mm.

Im not sure if 5 quarts will be enough. I didnt drain my torque converter and ended up using 6 quarts of new fluid, drained out a little when setting the proper level.

Be sure to follow the torque specs for everything. Ive read stories of people snapping the transmission pan bolts, they arent torqued that tight.

one of the main reasons I bought a mercedes specific obd scanner is to read transmission fluid temp when replacing the fluid.

Got it done a Shop
I spent around 225 for the labor and it took about 3 hours. In addtion to getting a 5qt. jug of Pentosin ATF 134 FE, transmission oil pan gasket (23 bucks for OEM), Transmission filter OES, a new Overflow plug (the green one that goes inside the the pan), ATF fill adapter from Amazon M12 x 1.5, (that is about 130). I got the pan bolts (the mechanic said that these are suppose to be one time use so, glad I got them, thanks TimC300!), and a new oil plug, and got another qt. of Pentosin ATF 134 FE. Had to pay for another 1 quart at the shop because 6 was not enough. Ended up using 6.5 quarts in total. So let's see 225 for the labor and around 150 or 160 for all the parts. So still spend less than the kit at FCP Euro. Do I feel a different in the car, slightly.. but enough to give me a better piece of mind. THANK YOU ALL!
