I would think that is pushing it, since 8" is the minimum width for the 235's. When the rim isn't wide enough the tire will be pinched at the bead and the tread won't want to lay flat on the road and will wear excessively in the center.
Odd... I just looked up a 255/45-20 Continental tire and it also said 8" - 9.5" rim width. Both this and the 235 tire list 8.5" rim as the width the tire was measured on. The tread width is almost a full inch wider.

3 years of use at 8 months per year and wearing perfectly. I'll likely get another 2 years of use out of them. The tire shop had no problem or complaints about installing them.
My owner's manual says the 20" rims are 8" wide (8.0 J x 20 H2)
the www.wheel-size.com says that GLK pre-facelift was equipped with 8 different tire/rim sizes and only one of the 20" rims is 8J. How could your manual be so single-valued? Mine doesn't have my exact tire size, it contains only general values.
My wheels that I already posted here look exactly like wheels of those guy in thread GLE wheels on GLK X204. As he says they are 8.5J, so mine are very likely the same. If my wheels are 8.5, I guess I am free to install to them everything in between 8.5" and 9.5" width. Am I right?

It would be nice to get confirmation on more options.
By the way, are you aware that the 20 inch options in your manual are both staggered fitment? It would be a good idea to confirm what size wheels you have before moving on. Check two, and if they are the same, check one more.

I turned the full lock, here how it looks like. I can put the biggest finger in the gap, so by avg estimation there is 1 more inch possible to put in. What do you guys think?
