A checklist for when you pick up your new GLK

So based on what has been identified so far on this forum:

1. Power Lift gate - make sure it opens and closes properly.
2. Navigation screen - make sure it does not go blank.
3. Engine oil - make sure it is topped up at least half way between min and max levels
4. Power sunroof - make sure it closes completely without leaving a gap

Aside from the obvious and making sure you get all the options you paid for, have I missed anything?

5. Check steering for any stiffness. Make sure it returns to center.
6. Pull slightly on your front Lic. Plate to see if the mount is snug and tight. Some dealers are not installing them properly.
7. If you purchased the "Sport Ap. Pkg." check to see if your GLK came with either Pirelli or Dunlop tires. Based on NHTSA ratings, the Dunlops will wear out twice as fast.

8. Have you dealer take off whatever garbage advertizing they stick on the car. Dealers like to put their emblems on the cars they sell.
9. Check rims for scratches and I would ask dealer to take these small (.5-.75 inch) round circles on each rim off, as they are pain to take off.
10. Make sure you have full tank of gas
11. Be preapred to talk about whatever other insurance they offer you (rim/tire/keyfob etc.) I went with tire and rim protection as I got 20's and crappy roads.
12. Have them pair your phone with bluetooth if they don't offer to do that for you.

As far as powergate goes, check that it works by pressing any one of 3 buttons (one inside with ignition on, one on the key and one on the gate itself). Unfortunately, if it works, that doesn't mean it won't start acting up later. The same goes for NAV screen.

Lastly, I believe all 20's come with pirellis now. I think only a few first GLKs had Dunlops instead, but they are also good tires. I'm speaking for US.

13. Check the front and rear undercarriage for any bad scuffs or damage while being transported. Yes this means getting on all fours.
14. Open the hatch, lift the cover, open the tool/jack cover and check to see if all tools/pump/jack/etc. are all there.
15. Open hood and check to see if the engine shrouding (the long rubber seal the surrounds the engine) is intact. Our's partially fell off or wasn't installed properly at the factory.

By the way, when we picked up our GLK 4M Sport, the dealer had 12 on the lot. Half were with the 20" Sport wheels. 4 of the 6 Sport models had Dunlops... and that was 16 days ago. Dunlops and Pirelli's are both fine tires... that's not the issue. The issue is you, the buyer, are paying the same price for these tires, but they are not equal. The Dunlops have a wear rating of 200 vs Pirelli's 420! The Dunlops cost less as well... $350 for the Pirelli, $200 for the Dunlops... MB should use tires that are of equal quality.

Really?! That's crazy and the first I have heard of this. Not sure if they are shipping the Dunlops here in Canada. I got the 20" Pirelli's. If this is true, it seems like quite the thing to look out for if you go with the Sport Package...

Why Be Hassled

You know, I recently looked into that "Premium Road Hazard" coverage in detail... spoke with the service/claims manager at the dealer, then called the number on the contract and spoke with a claims specialist there too. I concluded that for $1,500.00, this coverage wasn't worth it.

I learned that no matter what, they (MB) will NOT replace the wheels if they are cosmetically damaged, even if severely. In fact, they all said they will not replace any wheel if it can "hold air", even if the rim is severely bent-up or the whole wheel is oval shaped…. No lie!

They insisted that the wheel(s) will be shipped out to be repaired and then repainted.... period... and that there were no other options under this plan… end of discussion. But what upset me the most was that if you were to contest the repair, say you didn’t like it for some reason... like the wheel looked like crap, or the paint job on it just didn’t match, or you can see the repair job under the paint or it just didn’t balance like a new wheel should but still worked), as long as it was able to “hold air”, then binding arbitration would be your only option to fight for a new wheel. The dealer added that everyone who has tried failed. Okay... no thanks.

What a hassle... I figured that our 20" OEM wheels are $700.00 each. and the tires are $200 to $300.00 each (depending on the make). I’m a perfectionist, so when it comes to my cars, I'll take my chances. I can't stand to argue with service agents… especially when they know you’re right but can’t agree with you without being fired.

If it ever needs repair, I'll pay for it out of pocket rather than go through the stress of being hassled over a freaking wheel.

Yea, in the end it's all about the risk you are willing to take. I took the coverage because of fear of bubles in the tires. I replaced 3 tires in 2 years on my old car. Now I'm driving on roads that are worse. However, no problems yet, so the coverage might not be worth it as tires are pretty good, only time will show.

On the other hand there was a memeber who hit pothole on the highway, which paid to have insurance right there as wheel and tire had to be replaced.

I think my coverage was 1200 which resulted in extra 20 bux a month (financed at 2%), plus it covers dings, and windshield cracks.

Yea they should. I changed my mind to buy 20's because of better tires they come with (and rims are easier to clean). 19's come with crappy Continentals, that even my dealer said he wish they didn't put on any MB cars.

Also, if your new baby doesn't have a cargo cover, see if your dealer can throw it in.
