2017 GLS450 (on order)
I went to pick up my GLS yesterday. There was an issue with it and I ended up coming home in a GLE350 loaner. When I attempted to use CarPlay, my phone wouldn't connect but my wife has the same phone and hers would. I ended up having to restore my phone to factory settings. Now it works perfectly.

Android Auto for 2017 GLS-Class
But then I stumbled on this video on Youtube how to properly connect Android Auto to 2017 GLS-Class... and viola! it works. It's not as simple as just connect USB cable, when you connect 1st time... Here is the link:

I have been using CarPlay in my GLS550 for several months and IMO when using it for direction routing, it is far easier to use than Mercedes navigation system. The maps are clearer and zoom in automatically when you approach a turn. And having access to my contact list for telephone calls, or messaging while driving is a real benefit.
But their are some downsides, having to plug your iPhone into the USB-to-Lightning cable every time you drive somewhere is a pain. Hopefully we will get wireless CarPlay and wireless charging in the future. That will make CarPlay (or Android Auto) a no-brainer.

I hope the wireless version of CarPlay can be done with an update & not require new hardware in the GLS. There was actually a "wireless" option in one of the beta ios updates a long time ago but it didn't make it into the final version. Wireless CarPlay along with a built-in charging pad like some of the GM vehicles would be the perfect solution!

It will require new hardware because it uses WiFi not Bluetooth for the connection. Here is a good article on how it will likely work:

I wouldn't expect support for wireless CarPlay until the next full refresh of the GLS.

Question for you power users (I have searched online ers, Apple, etc. and can't find anything on how to configure CarPlay): ever since I upgraded to iOS 10.2 recently, when I connect CarPlay and go to Maps, it shows a map of the entire United States. I have to rotate the knob to the + button then click about a dozen times to zoom in to a normal navigation view. Is there a way to configure either my phone or CarPlay so I don't have to do this?

NFC in the 2017 E class is used to open the doors, or charge your phone if it supports NFC charging. I've not read anywhere that wireless CarPlay uses NFC. It uses WiFi so the vehicle would need to support WiFi for it to function. There are other issues as well. CarPlay drains the battery so a wired connection solves that. To go wireless Apple will likely offer wireless changing very soon. The upcoming iPhone 8 is rumored to support wireless charging. Time will tell.

The wireless carplay will be very handy. I'm getting GLS in couple of weeks and no knowledge of carplay. Can i get Waze on Navigation screen using car play or its very limited number of application will show up on the car's navigation screen?

carplay is nothing great. I rarely use it. Can't use waze or google maps. Just the apple maps. Can't use the touch pad while you're in carplay mode. Play with it when you get your GLS and let us know what you think.

Given that car play cannot begin to compare with actual phone functionality and usage, can some of you suggest a good dash mount (or air vent mount etc.) for a mobile phone in the GLS?
Isn't the dash/vent placement now different than the GL given the new GLS screen?

CarPlay delivers exactly what Apple set out to accomplish. Provide an interface to your iPhone so you are not distracted by your phone while driving. I've experienced Android Auto in a friends car and IMO its not as polished as CarPlay. All in all, CarPlay is a safe way to access your iPhone in a moving car.

Bumping this question on a very irritating aspect of CarPlay. Any advice from all you GLS/iPhone owners? You all suffer this same issue or am I alone on this? Even a SIRI command would be better than what I have to do currently.

Make sure your LOCATION is turned on on your phone... it looks like phone can't locate you, that's why you have to zoom in...

Actually, this is a known issue with Car Play. I was hoping 10.3 would have fixed it but its still happening. Personally, I prefer Apple Maps to MB built-in mapping but Car Play needs more refinement.
