I am new to this forum but if I may I would like to illicit the help of the knowledge base of the members of this forum.
I have a early 2017 (first use May 2016) GLS$50 with 57k so just out of warranty, it seems as if the fuel pump may have failed. The vehicle will not start, it does attempt to start but seems to starved of fuel, this is reinforced by the error codes: P0087 - Fuel rail/system pressure too low & P1 CCF.
My issue is I cannot locate the fuel pump, It is not under the middle row seats (per GL450) not in the footwell of the front seats, i can only assume it is under the third row seat?? but there does not appear to be the space for it to located there?? I have not yet removed these seats to check.
Hi, thanks for responding, it may well be a blocked fuel filters, but t believe the filter and pump are in the same location on this vehicle? So I would still need locate it to inspect..
Regarding MB doing the repair, the vehicle is no longer under warranty and this is a relatively easy fix, if only I could locate the pump, without tearing the whole interior carpet out.
I am not 100% certain but I believe its under the rear passenger seat.. Make sure you disconnect the battery before doing any work with fuel...

I just went through this with my X166. Thought it was the fuel pump or the sender unit as well but given the fuel standards now it's not too likely. Ended up getting a C4 scanner to diagnose and the active test showed it was the left high pressure pump instead. It's almost impossible to diagnose the problem without the MB Star scanner.
I think I have a similar problem. Has anyone confirmed where the access holes are in the floor for the fuel pump and sender? In the previous gen X164 they are below the middle row seats. I just removed both seats of my X166 and I see nothing under the carpet but solid steel with some sound deadener. Did they eliminate the top access and make you remove the exhaust and drop the tank just to access? Or an I not looking in the right place? Thanks.
docfnky, was there a specific code that told you it was the left high pressure pump instead of the fuel pump? Or did you have to run through a series of scenarios to narrow it down? I had the dealership check it out and they recommended replacing the fuel pump ($1,800.00 ). But like you, I'm skeptical and want to try and diagnose myself. Thanks.
Hi nkc, I don't have the answer you are looking for but if you go to your local MB dealership and talk to a mechanic and they maybe able to help. This worked for me in the past when I had question about my vehicle. Hope this helps.

thanks for the response , no local dealership close to me sadly and the Indy mechanic here says it needs to be dropped but am skeptical, been searching for gls tank drop off service bulletin but haven’t seen anything yet . I wonder why MB would seal second row access in newer cars when they should be making things easier ??
I recently read about how they used to be easily accessible but in the newer car the tank had to be dropped. The Indy maybe right in this case. I can ask my local dealer if that would help. Let me know the exact question you want me to ask and I'll see what they will tell me.

please help me ask, if it’s necessary to drop the tank to change the fuel gauge sensor , mine is short . So I guess I need to access the fuel pump and filter to change it?
i was hoping there is a top access considering older years had it .
dropping the exhaust and removing the drive shaft just to access the tank seems a bit too much
I never did find out how to access the fuel, tank the issue self resolved? I think others who state that the tank requires removal are correct as i practically removed the entire 2nd & 3rd row carpet and found not point of entry to the fuel tank.

All I did was, completely filled the fuel tank all the way, the dial in the car showed 1/4 tank initially and gas was definitely present as i was only able to fill about 19 gallons, previously when i have run the vehicle and the dashboard warning light has illuminated I have put in over 24 gallons. Who can say why?

hmmm in that case let me run mine down fully and fill up and see if it will help eventually
I've never actually checked but this is a 2017 GLS450 and I never get the 19 city - 23 Hwy more like 17 City - 20 Hwy, note I am not heavy footed nor do accelerate hard and brake late equally, I do not drive with fuel conservation my primary goal. That said, I do a lot of mile this car is now at 89K and it seems to burn a little oil, might be because I am using Mobil 1 0W-40, in any event it wont go 10k miles without a top up before the oil change? Never had this issue with my GL320 diesel it had 130K on it never had to add oil!

sweet, burning oil is normal for this type of engine , it’s somewhere in the manual even
maybe try Castrol and see if it burns less
mine is a GLS63 , about 60k miles , just got an eurocharged stage 2 tune to 700bhp & 700 Torque , will test drive in a few hours
hopefully my gauge corrects itself else I may turn to human calculator in the meantime
