About to get a GLS450 w/ 56k miles, what should I know?
Hi all, brand new here.
Short version, currently drive a Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and found a nearly loaded 2017 GLS450 at my local Carmax while I was looking at Tellurides. I just had a daughter so need a 3 row for road trips with her and our dogs. While in many ways I prefer the Telluride (due to its more updated interior), the safety track record of the GL(S) thrills me as a new dad. Luckily my wife has a friend who runs a MB service department in town and checked out the car - came back nearly perfect. That said, I know most issues pop up between 70-100k miles when they do happen - so what can I expect? I see the Maxcare plan is touted on this forum so that seems to be a no brainer to add. Should mention the spark plugs and a set of brake rotors/pads were replaced around 45k miles.
All opinions are welcome.. especially if you're also familiar with the Telluride SX!

We have 66k miles and largely problem free except for the fuel injector replacement which would have been quite expensive without the ELW.
alas you are beyond the date you can buy a Mercedes ELW so I would simply bank the $5k it would have cost and save for any repairs.
Congrats on the car. Be sure it has all scheduled maintenance done, or catch the work up yourself at dealer, Indy or DIY. It will serve you well. Lots of support here for you on this site.
Solid engine, awesome drivetrain, ok transmission and everything else is pretty good.

- While its a good model, and can be reliable, it also has some miles in it. At this point, the little niggles and problems will start coming. Precisely why original car warranties expire around this mileage.
- Mercedes vehicles are very EXPENSIVE to maintain. I have owned four already in the past two decades. If you do not have an MB warranty, your out of pocket will be ridiculously high.
- I would be very cautious about warranties from any third party, especially because your parts are going to be very expensive, and they will deny your claim with flimsy reasons and you cannot do anything about it.
- If I were to buy a used MB, I would get a Certified Pre-Owned and get an extended warranty from Mercedes. But thats just me based on my experience.
Good luck,

Imagine getting a warranty from a third party and later on asking them to pay you for a $1x,xxx part that needs to be replaced.
The Carmax warranty that the OP was considering has 2 stars / 5 star reviews in the Carmax website.
I would steer clear of that.

Anyway I questioned the mercedes tech about missing the oil leak, was told to bring the car back and sure enough, they found and fixed it. Had to keep the car for 2 days, so go figure.
Had I taken it back 2 weeks later, I am sure they would have stuffed me with the $1800 repair bill.
