Question About to get a GLS450 w/ 56k miles, what should I know?

Edit: Typo in the title

Hi all, brand new here.

Short version, currently drive a Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and found a nearly loaded 2017 GLS450 at my local Carmax while I was looking at Tellurides. I just had a daughter so need a 3 row for road trips with her and our dogs. While in many ways I prefer the Telluride (due to its more updated interior), the safety track record of the GL(S) thrills me as a new dad. Luckily my wife has a friend who runs a MB service department in town and checked out the car - came back nearly perfect. That said, I know most issues pop up between 70-100k miles when they do happen - so what can I expect? I see the Maxcare plan is touted on this forum so that seems to be a no brainer to add. Should mention the spark plugs and a set of brake rotors/pads were replaced around 45k miles.

All opinions are welcome.. especially if you're also familiar with the Telluride SX!

If it is white you have almost the same car as ours! It is the best vehicles I have ever owned in 4 decades.

We have 66k miles and largely problem free except for the fuel injector replacement which would have been quite expensive without the ELW.

alas you are beyond the date you can buy a Mercedes ELW so I would simply bank the $5k it would have cost and save for any repairs.

The late model 166 vehicles are the best MBs to own now in my view. MB has gone off the rails lately in many ways, sadly.

Congrats on the car. Be sure it has all scheduled maintenance done, or catch the work up yourself at dealer, Indy or DIY. It will serve you well. Lots of support here for you on this site.

Solid engine, awesome drivetrain, ok transmission and everything else is pretty good.

It is white - too funny! Really happy to hear yours is treating you well. Without the ELW, I think Maxcare is my best option since most extended warranty companies don't offer policies for us Californians.

Thank you for the reassurance and advice. I fully plan on properly maintaining it since I know these will run a loooooong time when treated properly.

It's Carmax's extended warranty. Like any, you can find a ton of negative reviews online but this forum seems to have a lot of positive things to say about it.

Got it, hadn’t heard of it before. Is it only available on cars purchased from Carmax or any vehicle no matter where purchased. Heading to google to read about it.

Google probably told you all you needed to know by now but it is exclusive to Carmax cars and only available at the time of purchase.

Congratulations on your MB. Note the following points:

- While its a good model, and can be reliable, it also has some miles in it. At this point, the little niggles and problems will start coming. Precisely why original car warranties expire around this mileage.
- Mercedes vehicles are very EXPENSIVE to maintain. I have owned four already in the past two decades. If you do not have an MB warranty, your out of pocket will be ridiculously high.
- I would be very cautious about warranties from any third party, especially because your parts are going to be very expensive, and they will deny your claim with flimsy reasons and you cannot do anything about it.
- If I were to buy a used MB, I would get a Certified Pre-Owned and get an extended warranty from Mercedes. But thats just me based on my experience.

Good luck,

.

Just FYI, my 2017 with the CPO extended warranty and additional 2yr warranty from MB on top of that has had every problem denied for warranty coverage by MB. The rear tailgate seal failed causing water to leak into the tailgate switch and fail. No warranty. The microswitch in the middle row switch failed so the seat wont return to position after it is folded down, denied by warranty. Only 40k miles. At the last service, 50k miles, the tech noticed the front driveshaft was leaking a little grease. I'm afraid to even ask them about warranty covering this.

... and to think your warranty is already from Mercedes and you still get a claim denied.
Imagine getting a warranty from a third party and later on asking them to pay you for a $1x,xxx part that needs to be replaced.

The Carmax warranty that the OP was considering has 2 stars / 5 star reviews in the Carmax website.
I would steer clear of that.

I'd agree with the other replies in that you're going to want to have a warranty, I've got a Complete Manufacturers Extension policy through Freedom Warranty on my personal vehicles and have never had an issue in getting claims covered on my S550, even the policies I've issued, I have a 100% acceptance rate on my majority Mercedes AMG's, Land Rover's, and Bentley's policies. Accepted coverage at all Mercedes-Benz dealers in the United States. Text or call me at (602) 909-9216 for a quote and example contract or send me an email at tgibson@highline-autos.com

That is terrible to hear. It is practices like this that give the warranty business a bad name.

Don't listen to this guy..Get the maxcare warranty, it is better coverage than Mercedes CPO and ELW.

You should do some more research on their warranty before providing a statement like that...

Good! You never know what will/can happen. My s550 with only 30k just had a pretty big oil leak covered by a third party warranty. I never thought I would deal with oil leaks at such low mileage, but again stuff happens and you just never know. Basically, lower mileage doesn’t necessarily mean you’re free from issues. Mileage is just a number but always great idea to some warranty on these higher end/specd Germans.

My 2014 E63s just came off the ELW in March 2021. In Feb I had the Mercedes do a comprehensive check especially for any oil leaks as the PPI done 3 months back showed left sided oil leak. When I picked up the car everything checked out ok with no oil leaks.

Anyway I questioned the mercedes tech about missing the oil leak, was told to bring the car back and sure enough, they found and fixed it. Had to keep the car for 2 days, so go figure.

Had I taken it back 2 weeks later, I am sure they would have stuffed me with the $1800 repair bill.
