Just bought 2017 Mercedez Benz GLS 450 4Matic. It has brand new 21 inches All season Radar Dimax Trail Tires with wide base. Extremely disappointed with the Vehicle's performance on the snow. While braking on snow, it just keeps slipping/skating and takes longer to a full stop even at 5/10 KM/hr, I alway shift Vehicle to "Slippery mode" while driving in snow, but even other than breaking, its almost unstable on the road. Apart from the winter tires, which I am planning to buy, what else I should check? Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!!!
Also, i have a backup Vehicle 2004 Toyota Sienna Van (front wheel drive). I drove this with All season tires every winter and never had problem like this.
Never heard of Radar Dimax tires and after googling them they seem to be cheap budget AS tires. In other words probably rubbish. Being able to stop in the snow is all down to the tires. Given that it's even unstable while driving further confirms that the tires are rubbish. Most AS tires in general are not rated for snow in the first place. They are mostly 3 season tires. For AS tires that are actually worth something in the snow look at the Michelin CrossClimate for example. They are actually rated for snow. As for comparing it to your van, the GLS weighs over a 1000 lbs more. Much more momentum to stop than your van. You better get some good shoes on a tank like that if you don't wanna end up off the side of the road or worse crash into somebody.

I have a new to me 17 GLS 450 and just got back from a Montreal vacation. Couldn’t be more impressed with the snow performance. We were caught in a blizzard coming home and were still able to charge through with normal highway speeds. The vehicle came with Pirelli Scorpions.
I have the same year/model and Have been very happy with Michelin cross climate tires. They are not snow tires but they are better than the old LTX and way better than Bridgestone/pirelli on snow.
Keep in mind this is a very heavy vehicle that does not stop on a dime and that all vehicles will slide on ice or if there is ice under a layer of snow. For this reason I drive slowly especially on hills.
I see lots of SUVs spinning out because they don’t seem to understand that AWD does not save you when roads are icy.
Please don't skim on tires, after all, they are what connects you and your vehicle to the road. Please don't drive all-seasons and as mentioned (more like 3 season) tires in the snow.

+1000
i have the Michelin all climates and they perform very well on snow.
if OP wants better snow performance buy dedicated snow tires for winter. Anything less and your vehicle will still slip.
