Question 2019 GLS550 - front seat removal for pneumatic air leak

Good day,

Does anyone have a link to a good guide on removing / re-installing the front seats in the GLS550? I am tracking an air leak that is causing the pneumatic features to not function. I repaired one leak in the driver's seat and another sounds to be coming from under the seat. I'm not short nor skin and bones so removing the seat seems the easiest way handle tracking down and repairing the leak(s). It amazes me at just how brittle some of the air lines are on a 6-7 year old car.

I have found (more than once) you DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE THE SEAT.

There are two tubes that go from the pump, in my case a black and blue. One of the two was all cracked to hell (I forget what one). They are wrapped together in a black fabric tape. What I did was simply tape new tube to the old (two lengths) and pull them towards the front of the car. You can cut the fittings from the old tubes with a razor and with a tiny bit of heat get them into the new tubes.

That's a rather less difficult solution to implement! Would these be the same small blue and black tubes the run into the seat back? The black one, that appears to go into a filter or air dryer, is the one I had just spliced a new segment into. Was 30' length cut in half, for 2 15' lengths, sufficient or would you advise the 50' length option?

The kid I had linked to would do 3-4 cars.

So you had a kid crawl in there and do it?

it's actually quite simple to do. The first time I did a seat I unbolted it so I can lean it back. The second time and further I don't even unbolt the seat.

all you really need to be able to do is get your hands in there so your fingers can grip the hoses. That said if you look like one of the characters on Wall-E I am not certain you can get in there

Ahahah! I may need to unbolt! But, on a more serious note, after fixing the obvious hose leaks I were able to find I attempted to adjust the lumbar again. This time I did not hear air leaks but, I did hear a sort of clicking (more like clunking) sound under the seat. Does anyone have suggestions on what I should like at next, before going and dropping $350-$500 on a proper scanner?

Hmm.. I have noticed that the driver's seat lumbar, under-leg, side bolsters and the massage function all stopped working a few months ago. I'm not hearing any obvious leaks but I'm guessing that's what it has to be. Do you get at the hoses by just taking the back of the seat apart?

I have never heard a hiss. My tubes (three seats now) had such big splits that it was just an open hose. No hiss at all.

And yes, the back of the seat (remove bolts - push DOWN to remove the cover). Depending on the model remove the storage under the front of the seat. Possibly remove the seat bolts and just lean it back if you need more clearance.

As someone that has only done this once, it turned out to be much easier than expected in my case. I ended up running all new tubing, as advised, after attempting to patch brittle tubing was futile. After removing the seat back just follow the advice that was provided to me and you’ll be done in less 20 minutes per seat. It is helpful to have a specialty tool to release the old tubing from the connector under the front underside of the seat. Raise the seat and move it all the way to the back to make this easier. If your problem is a control module, the fix is more expensive but no more time consuming or complex. The primary tubing is blue and black. I bought two tubing kits to match. ~$30 to repair.

Are you running new tubing all the way to the rear where the pump is located? If so, it sounds like a clear path if you are able to tape the new tube to the old tube and it pulls through freely??

Nope. it is all contained under the seats. I have done a few seats, never had to change the lines to the tank.

In the X166, the runs are all within seats. The controller and pump reside under the seat. Each front seat has a controller and pump.

well that’s not fun. Mine stopped working out of the blue after a 2 hour trip, but I get a loud hiss and BOTH front seats have stopped working. I thought it may be a connector at the pump but now I’m worried. Guess it’s time to dive in and start troubleshooting! Where is the pump buried on these? Back left like the cars?
