2020 GLS580 or 2019 GLS63 AMG

First post, hopefully I'll join the GLS family soon.

I currently drive a 2016 Lexus LX570, but want something more exciting (and hopefully still reliable). I need seven real seats so the first SUV I checked out was the new 2020 GLS. Test drove a GLS450 last month and was pretty sure that I'd want the 580. The dealer won't offer much discount from MSRP but I was pretty happy with the trade-in value they offered on my Lexus. Decided to think about it a bit more.

Now, the same dealership is doing its year-end sale on 2019 demos. They have a 2019 GLS63 AMG with around 10,000 km. When it was brand new, the MSRP was around C$144,000 (I live in Canada). As a demo they are asking C$104,000. So it's a C$40k discount.

If i go ahead and order a 2020 GLS580, I will pay close to MSRP, which in the spec I want, would be around C$125,000. The 2020 GLS580 would be quick, but not as fast as the 2019 GLS63. I will also likely have to wait a few months for the 580 while i can take delivery of the 63 immediately. I also don't mind the looks of the old GLS. Frankly, the 2019 is narrower and slightly shorter so might be easier to park. And the tech on the old GLS is advanced enough for me (360 camera, adaptive cruise control,...)

So, do you think the demo is a good deal, or should I go with the new 2020 580?

Thanks!

Merc one day I hope
Sounds like the older one is what you want. I would try pressing for an even heavier discount on it - my dealer suggested to me that a brand new 19 GLS was available for huge discount , but I didn’t dig deeper as I’m not interested. Also remember the resale value will be significantly lower for the older model as I think most buyers will want the 2020 tech.

The GLS 63 demo was probably not broken in properly, so if you’re going to keep the car for a long time, I would be worried about that. I love my GLS 63, as my wife loves her 550, and will likely upgrade to the 2021 version once they offer a substantial discount off list price.

Agreed, I’d definitely go with the brand spanking new 2020 GLS 580 over the older 2019 GLS 63 demo car. When you trade that car in a few years from now, a 2020 will fetch you more trade in $’s than an older 2019 model. Worse yet, a demo car with that many miles on it is like buying a rental car from Hertz: you can be assured it was beaten to death, and then some, with tons of “slap it down hard to the fire wall” full throttle acceleration tests, by lookie-loos jamming it hard to see what it’s got (not that there was ever any way they had any intentions of buying the rode hard, put away wet demo car). There’s nothing worse to do to a new car! That 2019 will assure you of a boatload of big engine troubles, and probably right after your warranty expires.
