GLS 580 tune
I am torn between the 63 or the 580. Has anyone tuned the 580? Is so how is the performance? Is the tune available from the dealer or ca it be hidden in sport or sport+ to avoid detection?

You are right but it is an auxiliary box not a true ECU tune. It probably modifies the input the ECU sees to make the ECU adjust. I would much rather have a true ECU tune when someone cracks the ECU and you can tune without an extra box or having your ECU physically cracked open (Weistech).

when my gls 450 arrives, i'm going to ping them about producing a solution for the m256 inline 6 turbo engine, which is a relatively new deviation from the v6 turbo engine that is found in the GLC53 and other earlier 450 cars.

if the GLS 580 shares an engine with the C63/E63/GTS/GLC63, which i believe it does, a "piggyback" is available from burger tuning - https://burgertuning.com/collections...mg_c63_e63_jb4. fwiw, their solutions are a bit more sophisticated than a conventional piggyback as they monitor quite a few signals and adjust accordingly. they also start mild and then create more aggressive maps based on your datalogging. if you're not familiar, they have some of the fastest turbo applications across a number of different platforms (different makes and models). if i were to bet, a 580 with the JB4 will produce more power than the 63. it'll also allow you to play around with the fuel if you want to (e85 mix, methanol injection, race fuel, etc.).

There are plenty of reasons to prefer the 580 over a 63. I suppose that's why the OP posed the question.

2021 GLS580 Renntech ECU
Renntech ECU upgrade
I went with a Renntech ECU upgrade which does not void warranty if installed by a Mercedes Renntech Authorized dealer. Aristocrat Motors close to Kansas City, MO is where I went. Renntech Dyno puts the 580 at 598hp and 705 lbs of torque. It is a speed bus now and the trailer with RZRs loaded up is a breeze to pull. Crazy power and defies logic now.

20ish HWY, really not much change there. When I drive, less because my foot is in it so much. The power is addictive. Pulling RZR on trailer across Kansas in the wind driving 80-85mph it was a dismal 7-9mpg. Drop down to 65-70mph and that improved to 12mpg. Without the trailer MPG holds to the 19+ range in Economy.

I bought my first Mercedes in 1984 since then I owned 8 different models, the last two are 2020 GL580 and 2025GLS580
I tow my Airstream trailer with them without any problem.
Some of the characteristics I like are power, handling, comfort and safety features.
The is my personal experience and opinion and I may be wrong

Whats the 0 to 60 with the rennetch on the gls580
