Dash computer is restarting over and over

My dash reset and part of the dash is blank and the big part just says Mercedes-Benz and it keeps resetting and never showing the Home Screen. It interiors the radio when it resets. We turned it off and let it sit a few hours and it didn’t fix it. Any ideas on how to get it to reset for good?

Internal hard drive is failing. Take it to the dealer and they'll know how to fix.

thank you! And OMG! This vehicle has been nothing but technical problems since I bought it this March. I’ve had multiple trips for false check engine warnings. Is it a lemon yet?

wanted to add that this was 100% right. The dealer thought they’d be able to download some software, but had to replace the hard drive. Thanks so much for the great diagnostic!

I never understand these posts, you have a brand new car with an obvious defect, why wouldn't you take it to be repaired by the dealership under warranty?

I get tons of cars through my shop with half-baked imaginary issues, but we have no problem at all fixing cars that are actually broken, that's what we are there to do.

Lemon law varies by state, for us here in FL you get 3 repair attempts at one given problem unsuccessfully before it's eligible, or 30 days total out of service within a year. Check with your local laws on that one, because it changes quite a bit.

I bought the brand new car SO it would not have to travel the 80 miles back and forth to the shop constantly to be fixed! New cars are supposed to work not have multiple defects that put you in an inferior loaner for weeks.

Unfortunately, with the severe increase in tech to meet customer demand in new cars, comes an increase in defects. Long gone are the days of a new car being largely trouble free for the first couple years, as with over 100 computers in a new S class, and literally thousands of electronic components in the vehicle, the odds of one just randomly failing are much higher than on a simpler vehicle.

It was a lemon before you bought it. Never buy first or second new model year vehicles.

I think that it is likely that your problem is the subject of NHTSA recall number 21V354. Google that number and you can read it. Unfortunately, NHTSA says the status of the recall is "incomplete, remedy not yet available." The recall was issued May 14, 2021, and MB is supposed to notify everyone by letter of the recall. I have not gotten my letter yet, apparently because MB can't figure out how to fix the problem, which is thought to be software related. It is a recall - a serious safety issue - because the backup camera is inoperative and backup cameras are now required by law for safety reasons.

My GLS 580 was built in March of this year and in late March, with about 200 miles on the odometer, the MBUX did something similar; it just went blank on startup and would not come on at all. The radio was also inoperative. The dealer fooled with it all one afternoon, declared the main control unit deceased and then gave the car back to me with a blank screen after saying that they hoped to get a new control unit from Germany in three weeks or so. I locked the car in the garage overnight, and next afternoon the MBUX came back on and has not been a problem since. I posted about it last March. You might look at that thread and try the remedies discussed.

If it does not come back on after locking it and leaving it alone for a while, I would print the recall and take it to the dealer with the car and invite them to either fix it or give you your money back.

Good luck.

they did try the soft are fix saying they did it for someone else but had to replace the hard drive as Eaton said. It only took 4 days to get the part. I wouldn’t EM accept it back in the meantime as they attempted to have me do - I said that it was not drivable in that condition (no HVAC, distracting on/off of the screen, etc) I asked them to pull the fuse and they did that and had many, many safety errors alert. So there are more safety features than just the backup camera impacted. I get it back today, will update with the status in a week or so.
