X167 front bumper assembly removal - guide

I recently installed a new grille on my 2022 GLS450 X167 and had to remove the front bumper assembly. I documented the steps as it may be helpful for others, please see attached pdf.

As first timer. How long do you think it will take to take off the bumper and install the panAmerican grill?

Very roughly: say two hours to carefully prepare and to get the bumper off, an hour to switch the grille, and half hour to put grille back on. So a full afternoon work if prepared. It really not that hard. A second pair of hands would definitely help but not absolutely necessary apart from the lift off/ of bumper, as per how to. Now I have done it once I figure I could do it again in couple hours tbh.

I got the intelligent headlamp upgrade/unlock through rjautomotive as well (well worth it), and at same time had them change MBUX vehicle images to show with a panamericana grille, so it definitely looks the part.

i want to confirm - i just discovered that there are 'automatic highbeam" - the "multibeam light" is NOT talking about the automatic highbeam, right?

I was looking at the headlight the other day from outside, and i noticed that it says, "MULTI BEAM" in the headlight itself. Do i already have multi beam unlocked? I had the AMG Night package, if that makes any difference.

thanks

unless you’re not in the US, your car did not come with multibeam capabilities/software. it’s not DOT legal in the US bc of some antiquated law, but i’ve read they’re working on making it legal.
we do have auto high beams, but they’re either on or off. e.g., if you have high beams on and there’s oncoming traffic, your car will shut it off. with multibeam, the headlight will turn off certain LED bulbs to carve a dark spot around the oncoming car, or the car in front of you, so it’s more dynamic. it’s kinda cool to see when a car comes around a bend and the multibeams continuously maintains a dark band around that car.
so in short, our cars are equipped with multibeam hardware, but you need to have someone enable the software to get it to perform the way it was designed.

Agreed - Raj did an excellent job - efficient and transparent - got Sport+ and Snow mode switched on too, and the perimeter ding warning (as well as the intelligent high-beam and panamericana graphic in mbux).

The headlight upgrade/fix is very cool - it literally tracks a cutout of your full beam to the vehicle in front. Tbh these unlocks are a bargain. And if for some reason your dealer does some s/w reset to switch them off (unlikely), rjautomotive said they would restore them for free.

i am in middle of installing the cks grill and i ran to a problem.

I am unable to locate the 4x wheel arch trim clips on each side. I have AMG Night package, and the wheel arch trim on the front bumper looks to be 1 piece instead of 2.

Does anyone know it this step is neccessary for the AMG night package GLS450?

Here is a pic of showing no wheel arch trim:

It looks like the AMG Night package wheel arch front section is part of the bumper assembly, judging by the split in the arch at the bumper seam/edge. So you not need to remove this to remove the bumper - it will come away as is. For the regular one-piece wheel arch surround, the front part was unclipped just to release the bumper, but the arch stayed in place. So yes, looks like you can skip that step.

I also have the AMG Night package on my GLS and for the life of me I can't seem to be able to get the bumper to separate at the arch seem on the driver's side (came apart easily on the passenger side). I have removed the two upper bolts in that area so I know that's not the problem...any tips from the group?

Just finished installing the CKS grill on my GLS. Big shout out to clunker for putting together the guides above...they helped immensely. Like takkie my GLS has the AMG night package and I can confirm that the four clips on each side mentioned in the guide are not present and can be skipped. Another issue that I ran across was that there is a clip on each side of bumper right where it meets up with the seam on the fender flair that was not mentioned in clunker's guide (not sure if it's specific to the AMG package bumper or not). It was driving me crazy as the bumper wouldn't come loose. Wish I had a better picture but this is the keyhole slot where this clip goes in...

The plastic clip has a button top that only fits through the wider part of the hole. The problem is that you can't slide the assembly back to drop through without removing the other half of the fender flair from what I could tell. I eventually opted to just cut it off as there are plenty of other clips holding that area in place. Here's what the piece looks like that I cut off to give you an idea of what I'm talking about...

Lastly I'll mention that the four round push clips mentioned in step 3 of the guide needed to remove the TGS are an absolutely pain to get to release. In the end I couldn't get them to budge no matter what I did so I ended up shaving them down slightly with a razor blade so that we would push through the holes in the TGS. Hopefully both of these tips will save someone else some frustration.

Overall I'm really happy with how it turned out!

haha - the plastic nut thing, i also had to break off one side in order to get it off. After one side is 'loose', the other one is easier to wiggle through (still difficult but more manageable)

Did you have distronic?

thanks

I do have distronic. Would have liked to have replaced the emblem with a blacked out version but not having the heated element I think could effect the distronic functionality in certain weather conditions so I kept it.

Interestingly enough that clip that gave me so much trouble was already broken off on one side…still couldn’t get the other side off with out breaking it as well.

do the rest of the distronic system still work ok? check all the sensor modules (front and to sides) are seated (should be no need to remove any panels to reach/check those.)
