As far as I can tell there aren't any off road tires at this size. I guess the wheel size is too big.
Is the only option to buy smaller wheels? Has anyone done this before?
I don't need anything extreme but I need something better than the stock Pirellis which are trash. I got a sidewall blowout just from going on a gravel road which isn't even offroading.
I don't know how Mercedes can offer a full Off-Road Tech package on the 580 and then not have any tires that allow you to use it.
I went with a set of 20" wheels wrapped in Nitto Terragrappler tires in size 275/55/20 all around. Great performing tire and not too noisy! in Big Bear

Can you let me know the model and exact specs of these wheels? I'd like to get these wheels or something similar (maybe in bronze if available) and these exact tires for my 2021 GLS 580. What year is your GLS?
My MY24 GLS 580 came with Pirelli P Zeros on 23" black wheels.
I asked the dealer's parts department for some smaller wheels and all-season tires and they responded with this:
After researching possible options, it appears MBUSA only recommends 23” wheels as a factory fitment for your GLS. You may see below, using your VIN, they only have 23” as suitable replacements for your vehicle. As an authorized dealer, we are told that we cannot provide a fitment that was not recommended by the factory due to possible drive/safety system compatibility issues, drive component warranty concerns as well as our liability for mis-fitment issues. I know there are some aftermarket options out there for some of the Mercedes-Benz vehicles however we do not supply them, only original equipment parts. We hate to send you in that direction however with the policies set forth by MBUSA, we have no options to provide what you desire. I do apologize we are unable to meet you need at this time.
He also sent me a screenshot with just 4 options:
1. Front and back AMG fork black wheels for front and back
2. The same AMG all black wheels I have now.
So once again, MBUSA is sending me to the third-party market rather than supply off-road wheels and tires for a vehicle that comes with off-road mode...

I think the letter you posted explains why.
I suppose you could spend a few thousand dollars on an attorney, to prepare a legal document that absolves Mercedes and the dealer of liability, submit it to their their legal department and wait for a response.
Or just buy aftermarket wheels. There are several sponsors that advertise wheels on this forum.
Or shop the used Market.
I just found a local independent mechanic. I will have to chat with him and see what he's comfortable installing. MBUSA just keeps turning away business left and right.

Unfortunately, this does open up a big can of worms of car makes selling us features that are nice in theory but are not fully supported in practice!
I've since changed to a 2024 GLS63 with 22" wheels.
And yeah I've come to the same conclusion that you've gotta get new wheels and tires so a custom shop is the best bet. But I'm not planning on any expeditions soon so I'm not in any rush.

There are multiple reviews here (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Nitto-Ter...-Tire/43411216) saying that pulling a trailer with these tires is a major problem. They say that the truck goes all over the road. I certainly need to be able to tow. Has anyone used these on the GLS for towing? How did it go?
OK, I think that I better understand some of MBUSA's concerns.
My stock Pirelli PZeros are rated up to 186 mph!
For example, the Nittos linked above are only rated at 118 mph.
I have yet to hit 118 mph, and I feel confident that I won't be hitting anywhere near 186 mph for at least another 20 years... But I can somewhat understand MBUSA'S stance here.
However, while they may be obsessed with AMG and racing, the GLS 580 is partially (other than wheels and tires) equipped for moderate off-roading. They should provide wheels and MO tires for off-roading.
Go with as much sidewall as you can and a set of wheels that won't leave you broke, either buying the set or replacing one when it loses out to a pothole. Gravel roads are not a challenge, but when you move on to ruts and rocks, smaller wheels are the remedy. My Rubicon's OEs are 17" that provide plenty of cushion with 265/75's mounted.
