Main Screen Dead Due To Radio control unit failure

Brought vehicle to Mercedes dealer to investigate why loss of main screen , charging ports for phone etc… apparently liquid spilled out of drink in cup holder and fried the main control board . The cost of replacement is $6200 which is highway robbery. I would like to see if the board is repairable and assume it must be located in the center console somewhere, so I am looking for confirmation that it is located in center console and instructions on how to access it ie: removal of center console. I found a replacement on eBay 1679001321 dealer say new part number is 1679001421 also would like to confirm that eBay part is in fact and direct replacement. Any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Was it a tiny spill or a big splash?

This is concerning because the area by the cup holders should be pretty water-proof, no?

Not sure exactly how much liquid was spilled it was my daughters car and apparently the children spilled it , but regardless you would think that this unit would be protected against this regardless of how much was spilled. And the price of the control unit is ridiculously expensive, I could by three MacBooks for the price of this unit. I contacted Mercedes customer service but no response yet. Not happy with Mercedes at this point.

I try to keep the kids away from the front of the car but a lot of them like to pretend to drive!

Good luck with your resolution!

Yeah, I agree ... One would think that that area would have a lot of protection against liquid making it to the electronics, but apparently not. I know that less than two years ago BMW faced a $5M class action lawsuit on thousands of their X7 models - the GLS's direct competitor - that actually went through because there were multiple reports of not just the drinks themselves but also the moisture from those drinks seeping in and causing multiple electronic failures to even deploy airbags, obviously risking passenger safety. Thankfully, we haven't had to it happen to ours.

Coming to repairing it ... Considering your dealership's course of action, I'm sure it would be a lot cheaper with an independent mechanic with sourcing the parts, making necessary electrical repairs, labor, etc. I know there's an independent mechanic place that works on Mercedes Benz vehicles - that is also a certified service center from Mercedes-Benz - and I have heard pretty good feedback with being highly professional with rendering services (even provides Mercedes-Benz loaners, too!). I hope you are able to find someone like that in your area. As for accessing and removing the center console, I am not too sure - but again, if you find can independent mechanic (preferably has Mercedes-Benz service center certification) they'd surely guide you thoroughly.

What did your solution end up being? Same exact situation happened to me currently. I have a GLE and dealer is also saying that updated part number is 1679001421
