Because mine isn't. The phone says it is charging but it does not increase the charge. Its always lower at the end of the drive.

Are you using wireless carplay (CP) or Android Auto (AA)? If so, you can expect the wireless charging to only slow down the drain from the pretty intensive phone CPU/wifi use from CP and AA. On top of that, I also think it just doesn't put out much watts. I think the fastest wireless charger currently on the market is 15w and I have never seen a fast wireless charger in any vehicle. It's disappointing because the tech is pretty cheap now.

It's only a 5W charger. That's barely enough to hold the current battery charge if the phone is in use at the same time. Many phones are capped at the slightly faster 7.5W rate. Only newer phones can charge faster. 5-7.5W wireless charging is great for overnight charging when the phone is not in use and charging speed doesn't matter, but it's not enough power for a quick charge and not enough to power the phone and charge the battery at the same time. This is one reason I don't really care much for wireless CarPlay. I end up having to connect the phone to USB anyway in order to not arrive at my destination with less of a battery charge than I started.

My iPhone 14 Pro Max gets extremely hot while wireless charging and Apple CarPlay is on. The phone eventually turns off charging because of the heat.

The new Samsung S24 and iPhone 15 can both handle up to 15w of wireless charging. The Google Pixel 8 can handle up to 23w. Charging at their max, these phones can go from 0-100% in under 90-120min without phone cases or intensive tasks. So you can imagine a 5-10w built-in wireless car charger with a phone case, and maybe a bit of wiggling on the induction charger while driving, could take 4-5x or longer to charge your phone from 0-100% and that's not accounting for any intensive tasks (GPS, music streaming, map data, Navi screen projection, weak signal strength).

My usage pattern ends up looking like this depending on existing battery percentage and what I need to get thru the day:

• 5-10min drives I'll use wireless Android Auto and keep my phone in my pocket
• 15- 30min drives I'll drop the phone on the wireless charger and continue to use wireless AA
• Longer than 30min drive I'll use a cable

I noticed the facelift GLE has ventilation underneath the charging pad.

So does the facelift GLS.

My iPhone 13 Pro Max charged slowly and did not get hot. My 15 Pro Max gets hot enough that it stops charging, even if it is just sitting on the pad with CarPlay running in the background (I rarely use CP - prefer MBUX).

Mine is the same, stop charging when it gets too hot. BTW, owner's manual says "If the vehicle is switched on you can charge USB devices, e.g. mobile phones, at USB ports. Depending on the vehicle equipment, the charging power is up to 100 W.". So this seems like a joke!!.

Wireless charging has a much lower max… IIRC it is capped at like 15w.

My phone has issues when plugged in and being asked to do too much - it spent half an Acela trip from DC to NYC yesterday crying about being too hot when it was cool to the touch, so at least in my case Apple has something else going on.
