Here is the the story: Heading north on the 163 here in San Diego at 80 or so, getting ready to get on the 52 (about 1 1/2 miles ahead). SL500 (previous body style) gets on the freeway with an aggressive entrance to the right of me. I am in the fast lane, and he crosses two lanes quickly and lines up next to me, looking over at me intently. I nod, and he takes the jump. I floor it and "crappy" C32 drops into 3rd. I pull him like he is towing an Airstream. By the 3-4 shift (roughly 105) he is at least 5 cars back. I was kind of shocked by the lack of acceleration of the 500, as a 600 which I raced a couple of months ago was pretty quick.
I still love the previous bodystyle SLs, but I think that the 600 is the car to buy (and, for $30K or so, what a bargain!). IMO, the noncurrent SL600 would seem to be the perfect platform for major mods. I am sure that someone has already done a twin-turbo or something of the sort. Anyone have any specs on a "modded-monster" (previous generation) SL600?

0-60 with a good driver, maybe mid 4 second range. 80-100, I have no idea, but I suspect that the time would be relatively low, as the C32 pulls very hard in 3rd gear in this speed range (the 3-4 shift occurs at about 105 MPH). The C32 is vulnerable when starting a race at 30 MPH (bottom of 2nd gear) or 60 MPH (bottom of 3rd gear). From 50 or 80 MPH, the C32 can keep up (for a few seconds, at least) with many cars with better HP/weight ratios.

Hi Red.
Here you have an indication what an everage C32 will do. Some are obviously faster and some are slower, but this should be representable.

cool site!!
All results are based on the very focused "Supertest" made by the german mag Sport Auto.
Also remember that 100 kph in the test equalls 62 mph, not the US standard 0-60 mph. Meaning you can take away a tenth or two in the 0-60 mph sprint.
I have actually seen the C32 dip into the high 4 sec, that was in a comparrison test between the RS4 and the M3, in that test all 3 cars produced numbers much better than they normaly do, so either the test was inaccurat or the conditions was absolutly perfect in combination with +average strong engines.
Let me put it this way, there is almost no way that my (modded) C32 would be running in the twelves in the quarter (which it has, @111 or 112 MPH) if it were running anything close to a mid 5 in the 0-60. With me (a relative novice) driving, I am pretty sure that I could hit a 4.7 or 4.8. With a talented driver, a 4.5 or 4.6.
If you are really interested, you can check some posts in the C32 section by individuals with similar mods who have run with their Gtech, and have run the 0-60 in the mid 4 second range.
A high 4 in the 0-62 would probably equal a low 5, agree? The mid 5 sec run for the C32 is also done in high temperature both in air and surface, that does not help the result. Europe only one has been significantly faster and gone into the high 4 as I said. Some have been in the low 5 and some in the mid 5. Still fast
What have you done to your car, your trap is very good, also a high 12 is a very respectable time.
And I was NOT trying to give info about you spesific car, only to what a 100% stock car normaly did in European magasines, thatst all.
A debate on tenths of seconds in a 0-60 mph is totaly useless and ends normaly in a endless number of posts.
Regarding the G-tech or simular instruments.... I have seen some pretty unbelivable results achieved on such things so forgive me if I say I do not put much faith in them......
From what I have read, they are normaly very optimistic.
I am unaware of a C32 ever being tested slower than 5.4 seconds 0-60, but am aware of several being tested faster than 5.4 seconds 0-60, so I would have to disagree that 5.4 is an "average" 0-60 time. AutoCar put the C32 0-60 at 4.5 seconds (they must've been on crack or they ran it down an 8% grade!), MBZ's literature put the 0-60 at 4.9 seconds, Road and Track put it at 5.1 seconds. Edmunds tested it at 5.4 seconds, but noted that the traction on the testing surface was very poor, and that they had tested the SLK32 at 4.8 (the C32 typically runs a tenth or two slower than the SLK32 because of a 200 lb. weight diff.).
In other words, 5.4 seconds is not an accurate average 0-60 for a stock C32. I would propose that 5.0-5.1 seconds as an accurate average 0-60 time for a stock C32. Am I splitting hairs? For those of us who love racing, .3 or .4 seconds is at least a couple of car lengths in the average stoplight race. This is the difference between pouncing on the Porsche (5.0 seconds) or sucking 911 exhaust (5.4 seconds).
As far as my personal car goes, mine weighs between 150 and 200 lbs. less than the average stock C32 (no moonroof, Optima battery, no spare tire, lighter wheels, no resonator). I am guessing a weight in the 3400 lbs range. With mods, it is putting out 400+ HP at the engine. I think that a 4.5 second 0-60 is a conservative estimate.

I was maybe a bit quick when I said it was average, but it is not the only one I have seen doing those numbers.
This cars are so powerfull that any loss of traction in the start will ruin you race anyway.
With a weight loss of close to 200 lbs and 400 Hp at the crack your car must be very fast indeed.
If you get the grip you should be in the mid 4 sec range or even faster, but to get to low 4 sec is not an easy task no matter how much HP you have, you need to get the powerdown.
And now that they have shut down Carlsbad, I would have to drive 100 miles to find a track anyways. Sux.
What they do not know, wont hurt them .... right.

BTW: I have been in Carsbad twice on vacation, a little place south of LA right
