Ride in 04 M3 SMG Coupe!!!!!

Wow. I was truely impressed, this comming from a CLK55 owner! It was a coupe SMG 04. I got in and he did about 15 neck braking donuts, then we left the parking lot and got on the street. He said he had it in level six, and when he swithched gears it felt like a minor collision. I am not exaggerating either, it changed gears harder than a manual. He did the launch controll (I think thats what it's called) and it absolutely rocked off the line. I didn't run against him though, I'm waiting for my new rims to come in thanks to Curiousgee! Then I will fill you guys in. BTW he didn't have any mods stock down to the filters. Later that night my neck was even hurting. I wish we had SMG instead of that BS tiptronic

Yah, it becomes an entirely different car when you put it in sports mode. Your head jerks everytime you shift, and its a rush to floor it.

thats 80ms sifting in S6 mode vs ferrari's 120ms shift times the new SMG in the M5 is supposed to be even faster. but as i say get an 6speed or a true auto cuse the other 98% of the time you are trying to drive with SMG its jerky as hell and will never be as smooth as an auto. SMG is cool for the first few months but then you hit your self in the head asking your self why did i get this.

It's not all that bad in auto mode. I drive my friend's 04 a lot and the only thing that really sucks about the trans is pulling away from a stop. Too slow and it bucks. Too fast and you sound like Mario Andretti. It is hard to find the sweet spot. Of course the Ferraris, Maseratis, etc. are the same way.

Oh cmon dont complain, Tiptronic is not bad at all.. on somedays I drive around on it for fun, I love having the power on demmand at all times.. its nice and smooth most of the time. And the down shifts during braking actually help slow you down like in a norm manual, its pretty awesome.

yea i know it has an auto mode and i can tell by you saying how it works that you dont have an M3 and you have never driven an M3 in auto mode for more than 5mins. auto mode shifts are so slow and lag and you get pissed of and just end up using the paddles. i can only drive the car in S5, S4 and below the shifts are really slow. s5 doesnt shift as violently as S6 but if i got another M3 which i wouldn't, i would get a 6 speed but maybe the new SMG that the M5 uses is better but to me SMG really detaches you from the experience of having a sporting car.

its not like the tiptronic on the ML the ML has a real auto that you can have somewhat of an input. SMG is a 6speed manual with a computer controlled clutch(you can even stall the car when it gets messed up)
