Don't race on public roads.

Hi folks,
first of all I would like to say, that until few hours ago I was very optimistic person and was having a lot of kill stories.
UNTIL KNOW.

Few hours ago I've had a car accident. Guess what, I was racing some guy in my 2005 Mercedes C. We're having runs from a roll. It was dark already and there was very little traffic on roads.

Anyways, the road was straight between two huge fields and with a huge turn at the end.
I decided to make this turn at rather high speed (other guy was catching up and I didnt want to lose).

So I make this turn at like 60MPH and ....................
.....................huuuuuge drift, I was trying to handle my car, nope, nothing helped. I slided into the field almost hitting a huge road sign at 50MPH (it was less than 1 meter distance) huge jump and I ended up on the field. I was totally shocked. When something like this happens, you never have enough time to think or to do something, it just goes by so fast, you wont even have time to realize what happened. I am sooo happy that I am alive and can write this message to you guys. Other guy has left didnt even bother to stop.

After that I realized that ESP was OFF! Yes it was OFF! I was schocked! I am sure that it was always ON and still cant figure out how come it was OFF. I could kill myself!

Please guys, dont race your cars, only on the track. Even if you are a skilled driver you never know whats going to happen. Sometimes weird things happen.

I've learned my lesson and next time I see some punk trying to race me, I will think twice before doing anything.

Thanks for your time guys!

This is why I keep telling people to keep ESP and traction control on when on the street. A lot of you think you can handle these 300+ hp cars but in truth 99% of you can not. I cant tell you how many people I have seen crash because of turning ESP off and running around with the "I can handle it attitude".

Glad you're OK. Glad that you have learned the lesson the relatively easy way.

Racetracks are designed and built for a reason, public streets for another. Don't get that mixed-up - it could cost you Big Time....

Thats the case. I am pretty sure I did NOT swtich ESP off. I have no idea how come it was switched off.
Yes, my front bumper is pretty messed up, but besides that everything is OK, I am fine too.
I agree with ClayJ.

Reminds me of when a friend decided to have some fun in an empty parking lot after a foot of snow came down. He took his Pathfinder out to drift around. Lo and behold, a sideways-drifting SUV meets a covered, curbed island, with predictable results. Total suspension replacement.

The ESP might have turned off because of the accident.

No. I keep ESP and DSC on all the time. I dont go screwing around on city streets trying to drift around corners like a lot of tards do, for the most part I drive very chill and when I get an open patch I will go WOT only if the road is in good condition.

There were 2 things that made me decide i'm not doing stupid crap anymore. First of all on thursday, I skidded on black ice (car wasn't able to stop) and I was forced to put it into a snow bank scraping the side of a fire hydrant damaging my bumper. This was a lot better than going onto a busy main street when I had the red light, and thank god there was no cars parked on the side. The first thing I said was I can't beleive that just happened to ME!! Secondly, I saw a Ford Contour cut infront of some one and turn his flashing light on. It was a cop trying to stop someone infront of him I guess.
Good to hear you're ok.

BTW, none of my cars have ESP or any type of yaw control so i've always been careful about that!

I don't claim to be one of an elite few who can "get away with" performing physics-defying maneuvers on the street with ESP off. However, ESP creates far more danger in my experience when driving spirited, because retarding power mid-corner upsets the vehicle balance in scary ways. I'd rather deal with power-on oversteer, thanks very much. Just because you overcooked a corner does not make ESP on the better mode when pushing it. Ask any SCCA-licensed MB owner how he drives his car at the track, and the answer will never include the words "ESP on".

Yeah as AMG-Jerry said - the ESP was likely turned off because of the accident. Even when you're driving out of control your ESP light will start to blink (as in ESP off).

When the ESP light blinks that means it currently working to keep the car in a straight line, etc.

When the ESP light stays on (even if you didn't turn it off) that means the systems fried for the moment and it off. At least that's what I've learned from some of these kill stories........

Its simple, don't race a luxury car, cruise in it. If you're going to race, use a race car. I learned my lesson in a volvo years ago.

Some people learn the easy way, others the hard way. You walked away... easy. Glad to hear you are ok, but why did you post this in the kills section? They do have another section for safety and testimonials.
