A Merc v. a Merc. (S320 v. V6 FWD Cougar)

So on the way to the hangout spot my buddy and I frequent, we pass this girl in a FWD V6 Cougar, doing about 55 in a 45, and then we get in front of her again (not cut her off, but just normally) and the next stoplight turns red so she gets next to us. I look over, and try to make eye contact to show her I'm game for some stoplight action. She never looks over, but she must have seen me out of the corner of my eye because when the light turned green, she got on it pretty hard and so did I, and we were racing up a hill (Pilot Knob, coming out of Eagan, going from Cliff towards McAndrews if you live nearby). She hung right next to me, from 0-55, then I backed off and she stayed ahead.

Meanwhile I'm trying to get behind her to see if her Coug has the V6 badge, or is just the I-4 model (It was the V6, I saw the badge). We both come to a stoplight a few blocks later and I honk 3x to tell her I wanna go again. This time the light goes green and we both go WOT from a stop....until about 80-85....in a 50! (don't worry, there was no one else out at this time...near Midnight) Her and I are neck and neck until 60, at which she begins to inch away and by the time I'm at 80, she's got a car length on me.

Overall though, I'm impressed. I thought my deVille would go down to one of these, and from prior experience, I thought the deVille was a lot quicker out of the hole than the Benz. In the '99 S Class brochure, M-B quotes the 0-60 for the S320 at 8.8 seconds...I did some searching and the V6 FWD Cougar is like 7.8-7.9 seconds, with a low 16 1/4 mile, according to road tests, so if you were to use tonight's results as a (vague) guide, that means I'm doing the 0-60 run in the low-mid 8 second range....a bit under what M-B quoted....nice.

Identical to this, but black.

Don't sweat it, you have a nearly 4000lbs car with a underpowered engine it in, keep em coming.

Remember man, it's more about the driver than the car. My buddy still doesn't understand how I make his station wagon fly...haha.

Thanks! I wouldn't say it's underpowered though.....it could use more power, but it's not hurting. But I suppose if you were to compare it to a S500 from that era or any W220 or W221, when the power increased dramatically, I suppose it's "underpowered".

Racing IMO is fun, no matter if you've got a fast car or what. It's just nice to run against something, especially if the race is close.
