Dead even race w210 E55 vs 335i

We took off from a roll and we stayed at the same distance until 100mph. I think I was pulling a litttle after that but I stopped racing do to I don't want a ticket. Those 335i turbos are quick! I am sure it's pretty close from a dead stop too. Mine is slightly modded. His had paper plates so my guess is it is stock. Anyway it's not an official kill but it was fun Anybody race one of those.

damn, thats crazy. but that story sounds about right and is totally to be expected...

still hard to accept that the normal top-of-the-line 3-series can run w/ a E55 AMG/

Nice run! I almost bought one instead of the SLK but I feel in love with the SLK. You can mod the 335i very easily to make some big power!

Well granted he is a 99 and the BMW is an 06 or 07 im sure anything BMW made then would get killed by his car... just my 2 cents

I've raced 2 different 335i coupes. First race, he started out ahead of me and we went up to about 100 and we were just about dead even.

2nd race, we did the 3 honk at about 45mph up to 120-130 and I pulled maybe 2 lengths or so on him.

+1. E39 M5 would take it. Comparing age of cars is like comparing modded vs. stock - its not even an argument.

I can definitely believe that as I had a similiar experience.

I wouldn't want to run 1 thats modded though.

Also, when I was at the drag strip there was a 335i sedan there. The driver claimed it was totally stock and he got a 13.6

I was only able to pull off a 13.9 that night.

i believe that as well. The 500 motor is very strong up top. it takes a while to get moving but once she does, its like a train that cant be stopped. 335's are quick though thats for sure, but those little turbo's run out of breath ya know?

Those 335's are quick, your E55 chould be faster a lil. I still cant find a run with a 335 yet. I was soo pissed two weeks ago, I went to San Diego with my wife in her C240 and this guy in a 335 was trying to get me to race for like 15 miles. I knew I should have drove the E500 that day.

I hate when that happens. I also had my wife (extra 100lbs) with me so that might make a slight differance. I would have liked to race him from a stop oh well I'll keep looking.

Are you talking about the track, what time do they run till? I work a lil late sometimes but I will see what time I get off. Or are you talking about the other track over there that runs between 1200 am-3 am?

What do the 335 weigh? Are they a significantly lower weight than most MB's of similar body style?

Your car must be well-modded or a factory freak, as you'd need CLK55 AMG horsepower levels to do what you're describing--unless it was very hot and humid, or the drivers you ran were in the wrong gear or were running 87 octane. Those things are putting out nearly 300 whp, and trap in the 104-106 mph range.

When I was well modded, I'd have put buslengths on it (maybe not buses but it would have been a severe spanking).

Dude, I thought it would have pulled me but we were going at it and this was a very clean race. All the way up to about 130 on i287 at like 3am. I have a witness who posted on this forum about the race too.

Maybe they die up top? Although a 106mph trap is a friggin powerful top-end, I only trap at about 100... ...All I can tell you is that this is what happened. The other night I raced one, we were about even from 40-100, nobody gained any ground.

I'd like to think my car defies physics

My brother is very likely to get a 335 in the spring time. Before I get rid of my CLK and before he mods it, I'll do some in depth comparisons and video it all.

thats what I'm thinkin...cuz there is no way that 335i shouldn't eat that car alive. They're rated at 300hp but they actually make plenty more like 320+ range. I won't call it "BUSTED" yet, but I will have to go test this out personally and get back to you on this most delicate matter.

Well, that's what confuses me: your car traps at 100, and a car that traps between 104-106 should reel you in, not the other way around. My car will put about 5 lengths on a car trapping 100 (verified this many times ), so I'd figure that to do this you'd need to be trapping at 107 or so.

Turbos can lose some power up high if their cooling system isn't up to snuff, but I haven't heard any such complaints about the Bimmer setup; even then he should have gotten out front down low.

If he screwed up and stuck low-octane fuel (or if the station at which he got it did, or just ripped him off), he'd take a pretty bad hit; or if it was in summer and relatively hot/humid, he'd also take a more severe hit (I once got beaten by an S430 on the highway in an Audi S4 (turbo), but it was about 105 outside and their cooling system wasn't the best on those things).

Or else he may have started in the wrong gear, you never know....sometimes folks w/manuals will not know the ranges of their gears and start up one gear up from where they should. But the odd thing is that you said you did this w/two of them, although one clearly was quicker than the other. With the close race, considering your car is within about a half second of his, driver error could easily add up to 1/2 second (despite what people think, most drivers aren't good/fast enough to hit mid 13s without a TON of practice, and very good reflexes to boot). The one that surprises me is the one where you got out in front....but who knows, stuff happens...I just wouldn't be banking on this happening every time if I were you!!

I recall reading that each MPH increase in trap speeds roughly equated to a car length increase on the highway. A 105 trap is a bit low for a CLK55, so am I missing something here?

Yes. I'm talking the trap speed of a 335i, which averages out to abouty 105 (some were 104, others were 106). So to put two to three lengths on a 335i, you'd need to be trapping at 106 to 109, depending upon where the 335 lies in that range--assuming no other mitigating factors were present, of course.

And his car is a CLK500, not a CLK55.

I was referring to your comment saying you've pulled 5 lengths on a car trapping 100 mph; by the 1 trap mph 1 car length rule, that would mean your car would be trapping at 105 to pull that much on a 100 trap-mph car. Since the CLK55 traps on dragtimes.com range from 107-110, I would assume this "rule" would be a bit inaccurate.
