Finally Got To Take Down A 335i

It's been a long time coming but I finally got a chance to spank a 335i sedan. Sadly it was a short, crappy little race (barley call it a race) stuck in heavy traffic. But he wanted to run so I obliged! He very obviously slowed down and matched my speed (ok, I was revving it up as a little taunt after I saw his his two tail pipes and 335i badge). He was in the left lane which was clear so we slowed down to open up some running room in my lane. I held it down in 3rd (in S mode) with the rev around 3000 and waited. When he jumped, I mashed it--it didn't kick down for some reason--and we went at it for a little bit. We really only ran it up through a gear and a half, until I came back up on the traffic and had to let off quick. We started side-by-side and by the time I got to the top of the gear I was in, I was about half a car nosed out in front of him. What's funnier is that there was an E46 M3 right behind me who seemed like he really wanted to play too. I bet he was bummed being stuck back there and watching us go at it. I wish we had more room, I was pulling on him--slowly--every second I was on the throttle.

I ran one a few weeks ago (a coupe) with my E550, I had him by maybe 2-3 cars by 80; I was still pulling when I saw him give up. They are pretty fast for a non-M 3 series!

This was rolling from maybe 40 to about 70 and I gained 1/2 a car on him. It seemed like if I got it up to 80-ish it would have been a full car length by then--I was starting to really walk away when I had to get out of it. If it had kicked down to second (I am guessing I didn't mash it far enough to press the kick-down button), it would have been even more. I really didn't get to start from a sweet spot (above 3500) but it got up on the cams quickly once we got going. He was hanging back beside me so I am guessing he was holding it down and building up boost but the big torquey 55 jumped out in front instantly. I could tell the M3 wanted to be there the way he was driving. I gotta admit, the E46 is pretty menacing looking in your rear view mirror! There we all were--all three in black--the C55, the 335i and the M3, all trying to get a piece of each other while buried in the morning mega-jam. I have a feeling the M3 guy wanted a shot at the 335i as much as I did.

I'm sure had you floored it he'd have dropped back much faster. Some 335i's seem stronger than others, but as a general rule (unless Vishnu) they aren't all that fast.

Well, I did have it floored, just maybe not past the kick-down button. But I was giving it all she had.

Wow those 335i are fast but I would assume weight because they are lighter and BMW under estimated their HP. I'm guessing 320HP or so....

The auto's put out about 265+whp and the 6spd ones are putting down 275+whp. None I've seen have done anything close to 290whp stock.

The whp numbers suggest that BMW should've probably rated it at 320 - 325hp. I won't be shocked to see the factory rating change in a few models years as part of a cycle update.

C55 will take a stock 335 at any speed. E46M's are lookin at your tail lights all day long too..

260-275whp would seem right, not 290whp.....

275 * 1.17 = 321.75 rwhp, sounds pretty good but I thought I read here that some were dyno'ing out more like 340 bhp. Either way, it's 11 lbs/hp versus 9 lbs/hp. It was over before it started.

What's interesting in all of this is that the Crossfire SRT-6 I just got mixed up with has a much better power-to-weight ratio (9.7 lbs/hp to the Bimmer's 11-something). But the BMW seemed like it ran harder than the lighter and more powerful Chrysler. Neither "race" was very good, not really heads up clean runs, but you can always tell--for those few split seconds--who's pulling on who and I put more distance between me and the blown 3.2L V6 compared to the bi-turbo straight 3.0L. They are two very different beasts yet they have similar acceleration capabilities (at least on paper). This is one reason why I love the little AMG motor. Because it's all torque and it runs the same all day long. You can always count on its gobs of torque, more torque than horsepower, to be there when you need it.

thats not how it works..........for 17% loss it would 275/0.83 = 331hp but its closer to 15% if not less than this anyway for DJ eachines so it would be 324hp. Have to be carfeul with the CF given on a dyno.......the CF is valid for NA cars only so at altitude the numbers will be high due to correction for pressure which is not required when running boost.

335i are into 11s apparently!

Ok, thanks! From DragTimes it looks like low to mid 12's with a PROcede and mid-13's stock is pretty common.

When adding HP turbo's are always better than supercharging. The BMW 3.0TT engine is probably putting out similar numbers to stock SRT-6's and not far behind a C32 or SLK32.

In my mind a race b/w a stock C32 and a 6spd 335i would be damn close. The C32 may pull away slightly as speeds rise, but I wouldn't expect it to win by much if at all.
