Ford Mustang 427R ... ha!

Don't know if this qualifies as a kill story but was pretty funny.

Did a little test friday to mod my intake after seeing just how hot the surface temps get under the hood. Insulated intake tubes

So I'm driving around seeing if the dreaded heat soak issues will hit again or just as soon. Not paying attention, a Mustang 427R comes roaring past me, so I lay off and make sure I can get to the light with no one in front of me in the lane next to him. (Making sure the H/E cools down too )

I pull up next to him and he has this ***** eating grin at me and he revs his motor a couple blasts. I smile and look ahead like I couldn't care less. The light turns and we start to roll ... At about 5mph, I floor it and blast past him laying down about 50ft of rubber and him about 10 car lengths behind me presumably cleaning his shorts. I'm betting he didn't know what a CLS55 w/030 was capable of.

At the next light he wouldn't even pull up next to me so I could give him a fair race, instead assuming the wing man position, tail tucked between his legs, he wagged off 2 lights later. In my rear view mirror I could see him giving the car a closer look and realizing he wasn't up against a regular Benz.

I was hoping to give him a real run. I know I could take him. Hell, those "skinny" tires (compared to the 030's) wouldn't let him put enough power down to beat me.

Oh well ... that's my "kill story" ... sort of.

I'm just running stock with 030 package.

Would really feel like I smoked him if he wasn't too chicken ***** after seeing what the car could do.

Those mustangs sound nice, but are no match for the 55s.

Mousetang Killer

Nice Kill.

What year did Ford make a 427 cid Mustang? Just curious. Was that a '68? or a different year? or was it one of the newer Roush 427R tuner cars? Just curious what you were up against.

That was a new Roush 427R. I think the motors are blown 4.6's

Yeah ... it sure was a nice noise maker.

I think after he saw my car lay down a 50ft double stripe just from punching it and leave him like he had the parking brake on ... he didn't want none a dis

I wanted to give him a fair run. Kept myself on the road moving slow to his left with plenty of room. That's when he decided to turn off. Damn chicken *****.

Nice. I was down the shore over the 4th and saw a sweet blue 427. They sound very impressive, but no match.

I'm really starting to think that in lots of folks minds that noise = speed. Go figure.

Yeah. This one was blue and silver. Nice and loud as he revved it at the light. Supposedly 427hp according to their website, so no doubt it can move.

I was surprised they don't use better rubber though. Makes a good tire smoker as he watches me pull far away.

I'd be on the Roush/Rustang forums right now looking for a kill story over a Merc CLS55 right now. No way he'll tell that story the way it really went down.

What width are your tires? I was under the impression the 030 cars were just as woefully under-tired as the other AMG's....hate to say it again but my M3 with just 333/262 comes with 265s stock and the M5 with 500/383 comes with 285s stock...AMG need to offer wider meat, especially given their torque and stoplight credentials...

Great point.....why do you have to buy an SL65BS to get a set of tires consistent with the power that is being delivered to the wheels?

Well, they need to accomodate those gigantic trunks and massive gas tanks, so I'd imagine that's a factor. For BMW the R&D process goes for performance before practicality, for Merc it's just the opposite. I can't believe how undertired the C63 is, I mean I'd be terrified to drop the hammer in a corner.

Preliminary tests of just tubes wrapped showed a 5 degree temp gain. The guy that data logged this didn't have even 25% of the wrap as I have on mine and it worked.

Yeah ... I'm comparing to the tires on the 427R which are noticeably thinner than mine.

Definitely could use more width for the power. They're 285/30ZR19's on my car. Decent width ... but could definitely handle more.

good source for all the wrap is DESIGNengineering ...

Here's their website.

I used 2"x20' per tube with about 1" overlap. Will be insulating the boxes next.

I don't get the intake temp mods. Theoretically, I'd expect noticeable performance gains in the winter, but I don't. So how does this work? I would have thought the volume of air coming in would be sufficient enough that outside air would not have enough time inside the hot engine bay to really change.

It would have been more interesting if he had actually raced you.
On paper, he's maybe 30 hp shy of your CLS but you out weigh him

CLS has around 500HP stock, so quite a bit more than the 30 you suspect. Also a lot more torque.
