04 M.Benz CL600 vs. BMW E60 M5

I posted this on Bimmerforums.com as well, just thought I would share with you guys as well.

Well, on Thanksgiving night, the Girlfriend and I were driving home from her sister's house. And as we are just crusin' along, an E60 M5 flys by us. We were already going almost 70mph in a 60mph zone. So he was freakin' moving! As he passed, he SLAMS his brakes and matchs my speed. I assume he noticed what he just blew past (I have a "V12 Bi-turbo" badge on my fenders). So as he drives next to us, he rolls his window down and gives us a big smile and a thumbs up. We do the same.

So we both slow down to about 40mph since there is NOBODY in sight. He honks it off, and we both launched at the exact same time. I was able to pull on him pretty much the whole time, but not a whole lot. We shut down at around 110mph, and I was about 2-3 cars ahead (kind of hard to tell in the dark).

Then we end up at a stop light, still with nobody around. And he starts reving up his perfect sounding V10 for us, and the thing is freaking screaming!! I'm not sure if he had anything else done to the M5, but he definitly had an exhaust. As soon as the light turns green, we both nail it again. Except this time, I think I got a little excited, and ended up hiting the gas a bit to hard, and started doing a little burn out. Took me FOREVER to get traction. When I did get traction, the M5 was prolly 2 cars ahead already. We ended about 1/2 a car infront by 100mph-ish. We had to turn at the next stop light and went on our way home. The guy in the M5 seemed like a cool guy, he honked and gave the thumbs up as he passed while we were turning.

So, needless to say, it was a really fun drive home

If your cl600 is putting down 560+whp your outcome makes sense.

Yeah, I agree.

I have no idea what mods the M5 had though. I know he had at least an exhaust, the thing was screaming!

Thanks.

The 600's are getting cheaper and cheaper by the day. I'm sure if you want one bad enough, you'll end up with one sooner than later

I know this is an old thread I'm bumping. But I a few days ago, I ran into the driver of this M5 at a starbucks shop. And he (as well as I did) remebered the race we had, and we sat there and talked cars for a solid hour. A very cool guy...

I know, kind of a useless bump. But I thought it was a cool story.

Nice kill! I got a stock E60 M5 with its charcoal filters removed. Never encountered any 600 V12TT of any kind so far.

The owner you talked to had only an exhaust or more mods? With your Renntech tune, it definitely made sense that you pulled on him especially if he was stock.

Yeah, a tuned V12TT should not be taken lightly. E60s are generally disposed of pretty easily. Of course, a highly modded E60, would have a puncher's chance....

Yup. RPI Stage 2+ BMW E60 M5 with RPI exhaust sections, headers, tune, under drive pulley, RPI air intake kit (scoops, block off plates, and bmc filters) are also not to be taken lightly.

Your right, not to be taken lightly. Those mods on an M5 would be enough to stick with my E55, or out run at high speed, but not the CL600. Once she gets moving, not too many cars stand a chance

Oh, and I forgot to update on what mods he was running.

He said, at the time, he had RPi Air Filters - Pully Kit - RPi exhaust - RPi Oil cooler, I think that was it. He has quite a bit more in it now.

Makes sense too. Only real performance mods at the time you raced him was the pulley kit really. Filters won't give one a big gain and same with just exhaust. Pulley should've given some gains though at least.

Almost stock M5 versus your Renntech CL600 tuned. Yeah. No chance for him I'd figure.

Even a Stock CL600 can walk a M5

If you didn't know, check the Renntech thread on the W211 AMG Forum. My pics are there since you guys asked for proof...

And I'm pretty damn sure that a stock CL600 will not walk a stock M5. At all. Nice try though.

93 Octane ABC is an SL55 owner with one hand on the steering wheel and the other one down Gustav's pants. I don't know how else to put it.
