reality bites
OK fellas, an opinion. The title of this thread "M5 vs SL55" is a little misleading. For example, I have a 64' Malibu SS with a Big Block (540") The car runs 10:56's through the mufflers. Needless to say, I have taken down ALL the M5's Ive ever seen. As a matter of fact, every Euro car Ive seen. So what? Its like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Of course, my chevy wont stop or turn so good!!! Thats why I bought my benz.

They must be faster and more luxurious than Benz if they are to win this contest.
I am simply stating that with the current AMG cars, Benz is leading.

This just say something about the way MB are getting more sporty
The Bottom line really is, Mercedes has really raised the Bar this time, and there are No excuses. If BMW don't match it...
If the new E60 M5 cannot at least match the Mercedes Benz for straight line performance, than No more M's for me. No Excuses.
don't get why do you guys continue to diss the Z8 or any other high end BMW for the matter that you simply don't like BMW or you can't afford'em. Diss'em if you are rolling around in a SL55, if not, then stop running the mouth.

MB vs BMW in general
Dec 2002 we came this close to buying a BMW 540i. A very capable 5 seater car.
Decided to buy a 1999 SL 500. Base primarily on the fact that there are no collectable BMW's. The resale value is also the pits.
We now own a piece of automotive history and have not regretted it for a second.
MB, AMG and McLaren should continue to push the envelope of production performance and luxury!
I love it!

Do you honestly think BMW will slack-off with the new M5? Obviously NOT! BMW will make a serious statement with the new M5, I can tell you that.

I can named a lot of collectible BMWs. M1, Z1, M6, 507, e28 M5, and the very early 328 when BMW first start making cars. In fact I think BMW probably has more cars worth collecting than MB, which only Gullwing 300SL, 190E 16v EVO, and 500E comes to mind.

Gentlemen, Gentlemen!
Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. If one person thinks the new 5-series is FUGLY, and another thinks it looks hotter than Britney in a thong, who cares? One person is not going to be very successful in swaying the other's opinion!
However, I would like to ask this: If one were to CHOOSE between the BMW Z8 and the Mercedes SL55 AMG, both in black, regardless of cost, what would the majority here select?
The BMW is the rare bird, no doubt, but IMHO, the SL55 AMG is the STANDARD when it comes to doing it ALL and doing it the Best!

If you're here just to be a contrarian, just admit it.
Otherwise, please be quiet and go off to roadfly.

Re: FrankW's comment
You certainly are more up on your collectible cars than I am. I have not been a follower of European cars all that long.
I believe I used the term "collectible" incorrectly to express my opinion.
Personally I’m not interested in owning a car that will someday be worth a million. I’m interested in owning a car that I can be proud of if I choose to drive it 10 or 15 years.
Similar to how the 450 to 560 SLs still seem to have a presence on the road … even though the current SL’s power and technology is far superior to what those cars have.
I can’t say there are any older series BMW that I see as often on the streets that still look as stylish as the 450 SL.
I also draw the line at not wanting to drive a car that feels too outdated technology wise.
The 1999 SL may be “history” as you say. However the power and systems are not vastly different than the current SL series. So I am happy.
Although the sheet metal of the R230, the ABC and retractable hardtop are all significant improvements.
The styling of the BMW 3 and 5 series has been great over the past 5 years or so. They have managed to catch my attention.
In Dec/02 we almost bought a 540i when grapeling with the question of 5 seater vs roadster.
the last gen SL = history, you got that right ... it's certainly not something you would see ... worth the collectible money 20-30 years from now

Don't forget about the 300 6.3, 450 6.9, and the 600s with the 6.3. Those in good condition are very collectible. The 1980 450 SLCs with the aluminum 5.0 are very sought after as well.

The SL500 does keep it's hold however has a decent cruiser with sub-par handling. Maybe it's me coming from Lexus but that ABC is amazing taking 90 degree turns at 40mph and not rolling anything what-so ever!
As for the guy who said there is no competition from BMW agianst SL55, he's right. The closest two door two seater is the Z8 (I think..) and that is raw power. SL55 can keep up if not beat it and do it with a 16 second drop top and massaging seats! Oh yeah, it's an auto with paddle shifting too!
they will always recieve moomeh love.

To talk about the Z8 as the most technologically advanced 2 door roadster, the Z8 doesn’t even have a fully automatic top let alone a hardtop, up to down in 16 sec. and what about the messaging seats and the electrohydraulic braking system and the more powerful engine that can beat the Z8 at a standstill let alone a rolling start. And many other benefits then the Z8. and btw the SL500 and SL55’s can be sold for above the sticker price after being used for a few thousand miles, and your talking about the Z8 barely used at $30,000 under sticker. and fyi bmw was known for its performance and MB was known for there luxury, and now MB still is more luxurious then the BMW's, and MB way past the performence of the BMW's. and if you think that bmw will out perform MB anytime soon look at the upcoming lineup of the mb's.the SL65 and CL65 amg. at least 612hp and 7**torque and the SLR 626hp on a V8. beat that BMW

Thank you!
The a used Z8 is $30,000 LESS than it is when new, and used SL55 is $10-20,000 MORE than it is when new...That is a $50,000 switch there, Ladies and gentlemen...people don't shell out that kind of cash if the Z8 were truly the better car...
Also please note that in the Wall Street Journal, the SL Models were listed as the MOST demanded vehicle sold new in the United States, REGARDLESS of PRICE!!! The Z8 never achieved that title because the car is overpriced for what it is...

haven't you read what the past 10 pages has been talking about. In the end it's the preference of manual versus automatic and brand preference.
you guys have been brain washed too much. The SL55 (perhaps new SL) is the answer to BMW's Z8 because the Z8 trumped the previous gen SL. There are couple years difference seperate the new SL and the Z8 being that the Z8 is older. Z8 also has a all aluminum frame which is not the 2 ton SL can sing about. BMW will eventually come out with the M6 with a 500hp V10 that will smash the performance number of the SL55. MB of course will make another answer then.
They are both GREAT machines. One starts out in design with the driver in mind, and the other with luxury in mind. I rest my case.
