Tires for ML320? Kumho STX? Grabber UHP?
I have a friend who is looking for new tires for his ML320 in the stock 255/65/16 size to replace the Genral. It is mostly driven around the city in San Francisco so it sees dry weather and rain. Occasionally it sees snow on trips to Lake Tahoe. What would people recomend?
The tire rack seems to rate the Kumho ECSTA STX and General Grabber UHP pretty high and it sounds like they should improve on road handling but I'm not sure they up to the occasional snow use.

Michelin LTX M/S
They're extremely expensive, but they went 80K miles for mine. Would have kept them as they had about 4-5/32 of tread left but they cupped and got extremely loud at about 75K miles. They're great in snow (much less traction light than the factory Dunlops) and increased the fuel economy slightly. Got Yokohama Geolandar H-T/S as replacements for them. They're inexpensive and totally fine in all respects, not as good as the LTX M/S overall though. The CrossTerrains are probably very good tires, but I hear they only last about 40K miles.

You're in California by your information. Get the Michelin Cross Terrains - you cannot do better in a tire for your use.
I do use 4 different models of SUV tire, in varying locations, in varying conditions, and on different vehicles, so I know them well.
Go with the Michelin Cross Terrains: you will be extremely pleased with them, and they will work very well for you - especially with mostly street and highway travel combined with the occasional trip off-road or into the snow.
