Fuel Consumption

Hi

I have recently got into an ML 500, 2003 model. The car is fantastic but the fuel consumption seems a little high. I mainly drive it to work early in the morning and pick up some traffic on the way home into the city centre where i live. Rest of my driving is pretty much suburbia with a little traffic. NO extra seats, and pretty much an empty car 99% of the time.

I currently get about 19L/100 km on Shell Optimax which is 98 Octane. Is this normal?

Thanks

Luke

Any idea what that translates to in MPG?? The 02 ML500 I had did about 13MPG around town and about 20MPG on the road. Why are you using such a high octane fuel, MB suggests 92 octane as I remember. You will gain nothing from the additional octane. We can't even get 98 here.

19l/100km converts to about 12.3mpg. I had a 2003 ML500 and that's about the combined highway/town mileage I was getting. My highway milage wasn't very good either, 14-15 mpg. That was one of the reasons I traded it off and I am glad I did. My E500 gets 22-23 mpg highway.

We,ve had it down to 12.7litres/100 in our 2003 ML500 on highway and when towing 2250 kg boat giving it a hard time its about 19-21 L/100.

Thanks. I have asked for the car to be checked. I drive about 400 kms and nearly all of it is at 60kmph. My distances between stops is about 0.5 km on average. Not sure what I can do except pay for the fuel and forget about it. I was expecting to go through about 60- 65L per week and I am currently goign through about 80L/ week.

Has anyone successfully converted this vehicle to run on gas?

Lp Gas

Hi Luke
Had nissan patrol both LPG and petrol. Using LPG towing I was getting half the milage than petrol. Worked out with our ML500 towing we where getting 5.5 kms per litre using petrol and LPG in patrol I was getting 2-2.5 kms per litre with a lot less power. I had also considered LPG only found one other ML on LPG but that was in England and tried to talk to the guy but could never reach him. My thought its not worth LPG even though its about half price the car is getting good Kms per litre. You'll find short trips push the Kms/per litre up but we usually get around the 14.5-16.5 kms/litre city driving and some times get around the 19 mark when doing short trips like going around the 10-20 kms in one trip. Just had the MAS replaced, there is a lot more power now. But shorter the trips higher the Kms/Litre will show up on meter. The ML350 hasn't much difference in Kms/litre. Cliff I wouldn't drive a 270 cdi too slow for a get aways.

What is the tank capacity on a Ml320 from 2001?

Cuz I got about...180-ish miles to the full tank.

this seems to be a growing thread subject, third one in 2 weeks... in various areas...

after my first one I managed to track the consumption in my ML... I got 462 gallons or something on one tank and had 28 miles left in the tank...

Something is def wrong because an ML55 doesnt get gas mileage like that

'02 and up non ML55's had 22 gallon tank, pre '02, 18 or 18.5 gallons. Tank size will obviously affect the range.

With my '02 ML500, I get 17-20 highway, very dependent on speed. Once over 70, mileage drops below 19. Under 65, I can hit 20. Part of the mileage problem is the relatively stiff gearing for a big V8. Diff was changed from 3.46 to 3.70 as part of the '02 revisions. With similar torque, a 270CDI has 3.07.

Jerry
