trip computer w163

The last week, I have installed the trip computer W163 on my ML 270 (2004) , for the first time because my car made without the trip computer.

The trip computer has 8 pin input.

1 = EDV (but maybe this is a output sensor signal to EDV)
2 and 5 = are the electronic compass
4 and 3 = are can connection
6, 7 and 8 = are the 12 Volt and Key .

I have connected only the follow pin: 4, 3, 6 , 7 , and 8

The remaining pin: 1, 2 and 5 are free (disconnected).

The Extended – Activity – Module is able to see the trip computer.

BUT...... , the trip computer doesn't work.

Don't read the KM (on display - - -)
Don't read the L/100 Km (on display 0.0)
... A so on

I think the problem is on the gol signal (sped signal), but the trip computer doesn't have the this kind of signal input.

Who can help me ?

Thank you
Massimo

trip computer doesn't work

Yes, I bought the trip computer on “ebay”.

I'm not secure if the devices work good.

For Mercedes service the problems is on engine electronic system, the answer is. the can-bus system doesn't have the software control for the trip computer.

I don't know if the Mercedes answer is correct because in the AAM unit (All Activity Module) there is the trip computer option on / off .
Why there is this option if there is not the software to control the device ?

The trip computer work without the The electronic compass (RS485)?

The trip computer work without the EDV? my car made without this system.

Where I can buy the compas system (RS485) and another Trip computer at good price?

Where I can send the trip Computer to test it?

thank you
Max

I am not certain but from what I have heard no programming is necessary for the trip computer. As for E Bay, much of the stuff sold, particularly electronics is junk, defective or obsolete. There are many versions of the trip computer as its been upgraded numerous times for reliability issues. How do you think that this stuff gets in someones hands to sell on E Bay?? Junk yards, dealers trash bins, returned defective items, etc, etc, etc. All MB parts are sold retail thru MB dealers. Some of the web sites that offer new discounted dealer parts are owned or partially owned by dealers. Other than those as I previously said, is mostly junk.

Have no idea what the most current part number is or for that matter any part numbers. I do know that there have been a number of "upgrades" to the thing and lots of the earlier part numbers have been superceeded. Best bet is to visit or call a dealer parts dept and ask them. There are also several different part numbers that will vary with what model year you have. I do know that the one that was in my 98 and the one that was in my 02 had some subtle differences.

Thank you to all for your help,

I follow all guides line for a good installation, but the trip computer doesn't work.

In this moment my problems are:

It is possible to make a trip computer retrofit for Mercedes ML (European Version) CDI 270 (2004)?

My car have this identified number WDC1631131A485427 and the trip computer part number is A163 540 64 11.

In the Can bas L and H signals there are the output signal good for the trip computer?

I am ready to purchase a new trip computer on Mercedes store, but I'm not secure if my car has the possibility to make the retrofit.

....... Who can help me ?

Thank you again

Massimo

From what I have read here and on other forums yes, it can be retrofitted rather easily. However, I would check with a dealer service or technical department to determine the correct trip computer part number and install that one.

I have inserted an signal amplifier / clean between can-bas and the computer.

The next step will be to install the compass.

Well my friends, I have just install the trip computer and it is working, I found the CAN bus signal in the ESP connector, so, I took it until the trip unit and it started to work inmediately.

Trip computer

Hello again
My car has no 8 pin connections for trip computer. The only connections that is free is for the backmirror, and a connector with brown and white wire. Also a bigger grenn connection with two brown wires.
Is there anyone who have innstalled a trip computer where there is no prewiring?? I know that it will work with the bus connections and 12 V+ and ground. Where can I find these wires?
Thanks for replies!

I instaled the trip in my car without prewiring, I picked up 12V+, 12V ignition and ground from the radio, and can-bus signal from ESP module, after that I discovered that the can-bus also exist closer, in the dashboard.

Installing Trip computer

Thanks very much for your assistance. Could you please tell me where I can find the Can Bus(colors of the wiring) in the dash or where the ESP is placed and where to connect.(Number of connector, wirecolor...)
Thanks

The can bus High is white and the can bus low is green, is very easy to identify them because they are interlaced, in the w163 the best place to pick up them is next to the dash conector, also you can pick up them in the ESP module but is is farther, in the fuse box.
