Okay here is the deal. I have a 99 ml320 and the other day i floored it and hit a pot hole. After i shut the car off and shut it on I heard a strange noise from the undertail. My uncle who is a crack mechanic took a look at the car and told me it was the muffler. I took the vehicle to meineke and they told me it was the catalytic converter. They wanted to charge me $389.00 to cut the bad cat out and replace it with an aftermarket. Not satisfied i went for a second and third opinion but i am still not satisfied. My uncle wants to weld it but i was told not to have that done. Can anyone give me some advise and what to expect. I definitely know that it is the cat due to air coming out of it and noise coming directly from it. What is the price range and should i look around on the net for the items rather than have some mechanic give me his two cents.

dont call the dealer. They may just say there is no recall. Just bring the car there and ask the Service advisor regarding the CAT recall due to failed weld on the Cat. The cat recall do not expire BTW.

MB has determined that one of the two CAT suppliers for those vehicles involved did a poor job welding the seams on the CATs therefore only vehicles equipped with bad CATs (falls within a certain range of VINs) will be recalled.

Our '99 ML430 had its catalytic converters replaced under the national emissions law that says automobiles are covered for 8 years / 80k miles. If your ML is under 80k miles, you should be covered under that emissions law.
