Aftermarket Muffler for the ML

Im on MagnaFlow trying to find a muffler for my 2000 ML 55 I want to finally get this job done. I dont know which one to get. So I need everones help. If I order it then I know ill find some time to get it done.

Which universal muffler should I go for on the page no idea the inlets and outlet sizes and how many either? Im guessing its 2 1/4 or 2.5 inchs in and out. Anyone know?

Also are there any other companies out there that make a nice sounding muffler? maybe borla?

and one last thing. If I get the Y pipe can i just run a straight pipe and delete the resonator or do I need to do some extra bending?

EXHUAST SHOP... JUST GO TO ONE... we have had this convo a million times man...

Unless your going to do the work yourself, no one will take in a muffler or a Y pipe... they will sell you there own parts instead and then your stuck with extra parts...

I have read that using a Y-pipe into a Magnaflow for F-body GM car will be very loud. Should give you good gain. It should sound something like a Camero or Firebird with exhaust work.

couple more options.

1. Y- pipe to stock rear muffler. Basically a Resonator delete. Should not get that loud and will give some exhaust rumble. I had good results from my BMW 540i modification. S-class and SL class owners had good results from a resonator delete also. should cost about $70

2. If you want all out power and good V8 sound. get a X-pipe into 2 high flow muffler of your choice in the center then run 2 pipe to the rear eliminating rear muffler. X-pipe will smooth out exhaust and take out most of the droning. Should give an awesome V8 muscle car sound if you want to go that route. There is plenty of room under the ML to do this This may cost about $200-$300.

I dont think X pipe willwork... not on the underbody of the ML, the gas tank sits on the driver side under the back hatch, the factory exhaust goes in to one pipe at the resonator and then loops over the back axle and in to the muffler at the top

i went to a shop with no luck. They didnt want to really do it.

Correct Me if I am wrong. The Resonator sits under the middle of the car closer to the passengers side? and the muffler is in the back right behind the bumper below the trunk?

I was also told I would loose alot of back pressure if i pull out the resonator.

they had me so confused. Pete which magnaflow did you have cause I was going to buy one but the guy told me it prob wont fit being that it doesnt line up to well with where the "muffler" is (this is when he said it was under the rear passengers door) ..

this dude had me so confused. any help would be great. and thanks for bearing with me..

my boy gave me a great idea
but we gotta check for fitment later today when i get to the shop...

at the last cats we run a straights back to the last muffler Resonator(still need some clarification on that) then we add a muffler right befor the tips? what do you guys think.. same setup but only one muffler at the end?

I guess its basically the resonator/muffler delete.. Ill see what exactly were doing.. i hope this works...

Under the passenger side seat is the - resonator or Center muffler.
Under the rear bumper is the - muffler or rear muffler.

So what if you loose back pressure? is that a bad thing? Go to another shop that knows what the hell they are doing.

not worth it, the gain is little to nothing on the MLs, if anything you do it for sound.

Riffy, Im with Fkong, take it to another shop who knows what they are doing and isnt afraid to work on a mercedes. most people see mercedes and think $$$, in which case you need to move on to another shop. You have to be willing to travel to get it done right, either up here to my guy, or to Jersey(there are a number of Jersey ML owners who have had luck with some shops) and I bet there are a ton of places around the city...

Steps to doing custom exhuast on an ML55... Cut resonator, weld in muffler(2 in on one side, 1 out on the other, all 3" piping)

Cut out AMG Muffler, bend new piping to fit, use new tips or cut off exhisting AMG tips off of AMG muffler... Spray welded areas to prevent rusting

done and done.... Not hard for any shop that knows what they are doing, I dont care what they say. My original setup(done before I purchased the 55) was done at a local shop back in 00 shortly after the first owner picked up the car. it took the shop some 4 or 5 hours to figure out how to do the bends but once they figured it out, it went quick. Last year I went back to them to redo something, and they did all the work while I waited, in total, was about an hour for them to patch it up

for a shop to be hemming and hawwing it means they dont want your business...

if you or your friend have never done an exhuast before, yours isnt the one you want to start with...IMO, its not a difficult car, but fitment is off JUST enough to **** you off royally

Exclamation

I gave up on my custom muffler for the MLs due to too much resonance (and my muffler fabricator changed jobs). I've now gone to a bolt in y pipe where the center muffler which then bolts to an over the axle pipe that y s to the dual outlets on the bumper. AMG tips are not available individuallly so I had to break down and cut them off the stock muffler and have them welded on the new pipe. I stayed with 2 3/4" pipe to keep some restriction as a single 3" out the back from the front y caused a significant loss of power but was strangely quiet for a straight pipe.

Now the sound is "adult" AMG without any resonance and plenty of power. I'll probably have to reinstall the center muffler for inspection but that is a 5 min. process. I'm still confused at to why MB put TWO big mufflers on a performance vehicle yet only one on the smaller motors - an AMG should not be so quiet as to barely hear it running from inside IMHO.

So you dont have any mufflers at all? just 2 y-pipes?
