European COMAND map CDs

Sorry to start a new thread, replying to the old thread is broken :-(

Actually, COMAND is made by Bosch. European maps are supplied by Teleatlas, and can be purchased from their web site www.teleatlas.com

- I suggest you look on that web site to work out what map/mapdisk you need then look on ebay in the given country/area you are going to (such as www.ebay.co.uk or www.ebay.de)

But are you talking about the US or the EU version? Because i have the US version cd and i says that they are made for alpine by navtech...

So i think you got things mixed up? I could be wrong to but that is what people have been telling me and that i can see for myself...

thnx

It sounds to me like the US map CD's are made by Navtech for Alpine (Navtech being a mapping company).

The European map CDs are made by Teleatlas and are compatable with Bosch nav systems.

COMAND itself is made by Bosch for Mercedes. Almost the same hardware is used in the Audi nav system. - In fact in the European COMAND s/w update (not the maps, the actual s/w that runs COMAND) the configuration files show settings for the Audi etc ..

Now, saying that I have never actually got my hands on a US COMAND - I am in Europe - I do have both European COMANDs (CLK and S class systems) on my test bench though ;-) But Ive seen pictures of US COMAND on the bench and they are the same except you have a blank button where we have TV buttons, and the s/w running on them is different.

What I dont know for sure is that the US COMAND's will read the European Teleatlas disks - but the original poster of the article seems to have a European COMAND running with the US maps without an issue.

Well i even contacted Alpine in germany but they don't make european maps for the US system. But this was the german division.. Maybe they have a special US divions that makes them if not what work around it there.

But there are some differences between the US en EU version.. i will take a pic off mine...

I even had a guy from teleatlas on the phone concerning this but he could tell me that they didn't make maps for the ML320 US MCS (alpine) system

What everyone needs to realize is that what your vehicle has is MCS, All post 2000 US MLs have this. All european MLs have command. Command and MCS are totally different systems, made by different companies. Command being Bosch, and MCS being Alpine.

Sorry, I thought you had imported a ML with COMAND from Europe to USA and wanted Euro maps for it.

I know nothing about MCS.

However, given Alpine makes the maps for it, and Alpine do make nav systems for Europe [see www.alpine-europe.com], you could try buying a european map for a European alpine nav unit and see if that works. [even though Germany says it wont work] - suggest buying and older one on ebay to test with rather than paying full price

I know that alpine makes a dvd-rom nav system, the ml's is cd-rom based. So if you try to get a cd for a alpine unit, make sure you get the right one.

Yes maybe that is the best way to go.. But my guess is that the software is complete different...

But there is no one that resides in the states that could check with his/her MB dealer if the sell EU maps for the US MCS/Alpine?

If you go to the mbusa.com site, in top left hand corner is locate a dealer, go there and enter a zip code (such as 10004) into the locator and you'll get a dealer you could phone, - Id try more than one just to make sure they come up with a consistant story

Well i could sure try that but it would probably cost me more to call then the cd's would cost. Joke..

Well i would just like to mail because i would have to call from the netherlands and mail works without time zones...

Or maybe someone would read this that lives in the States that could check with his dealer and reply here?

Or is that too far fetched?

MCS nav-CD's for Europe

Hi,

Try mailing mbusa - or maybe better the customer service directly. I think there is a link on the site. Otherwise try to contact the European Customer Service in Stuttgart - but they might try to push you away, as you're (in their eyes) driving something that you should not be driving if you're living where you are....

Kind regards,
Birger in rainy Luxembourg
