Unhappy 01 ML320 BAS/ESP, 4-ETS, ABS, Brake Light

I have a 01 ML320. I start the suv and everything is fine. Check engine light stays on but otherwise runs great. After runing for 7 minutes and 45 seconds there are several beeps and the BAS/ESP, 4-ETS+, ABS, and Brake Light all come on. The speed odometer, odometer, and sometimes fuel gauge stop working. It will stay in witchever forward gear it is in (ie; if its in 3rd when this happends, even if i stop and put it in reverse, back up, then put it back in Drive, even though it will say its in D the transmission would still be in 3rd. or whatever it was when this happend) Sometimes it will run rough, other times it will go like a raped ape. Now hears the kicker. All i have to do is restart the car and everything is fine. All lights go out but the check engine light. Sometime the check engine light goes off. Of course, after runing for 7 minutes and 45 second it starts beeping again, and the BAS/ESP, 4-ETS+, ABS, and Brake light come on again, etc. My local dealer is stumped. Anyone got any ideas? the one constant is`the time from start to error. I would be greatful for any ideas.
Re-starting every 7.5 minutes is getting old. :~(`

I believe I read somewhere on this forum that there is a sensor in the brake pedal that could be causing this.

If your stop lamp switch goes bad you get the bas/esp abs lights on but not the other symptoms your experiancing. The first thing i notice about your issues is to me it seems like your losing 15/15r circuit or switched power. I would have your tech back probe the ignition swith(common problem with 163 ml ) and drive untill the problems start and see what happeneds to the voltage.

You can also just test fit a switch / 20 min to install and see if it fixes

Good luck

I too have exactly the same problem with my 2002 ML320, except after turning off/on the engine the problem will not appear until the next morning. Are you suggesting the ignition switch? I have replaced the brake switch twice already with no remedy.

I have Carsoft 7.4, error code is C1401 CAN Bus cannot communicate with ESP module. The module is over $1000 so I am hesitant and looking for help from this forum

ML320 2000 BAS/ETS and BAS Lights on

I have this problem on my instrument panel after I start my engine. Sometimes it will turn off during morning start and then after awhile driving it the BAS/ETS and ABS lights turns on steady again. Anybody can give me a hint.

BAS/ESP ETS ABS Lights on

I have the same problem with a 2000 ML320. I have replaced the brake light switch based upon posts on this forum. Did not help. In cold snow country about 2 weeks ago, the lights all went out momentarily for about 15 minutes after a cold start. Lights all came back on in about 15 minutes.

My mechanic said it was the ABS controller at over $1,000 but he won't guarantee that will fix it. I can't believe Mercedes can not fix this problem. Mercedes needs to pull their head out of the sand and design a warning light system that is more reliable. This problem appears to be pretty common with Mercedes. Shame on Mercedes Benz. I prefer to own vehicles that are serviceable. My next one may be something different.

I just bought a 2002 ML320 with the same issue, all 3 lights (ABS, ETS, BAS/ESP) car drives fine.... no other symptoms. Odometer works, fuel gage works, everything works.

When I start car slowly, and get to ON position, I see ALL lights across the bottom... Crank the car- the lights go out.. and if I sit there in Park - they never come on. As soon as I drive (not brake, but actually shift and drive) they all three come on yellow. BRAKE LIGHTS WORK FINE BTW.

ABS/ESP Module

I am having the same issues with my 2000 ML320. I believe it's a defective ABS/ESP Module. I am currently sending mine to be repaired. I'll let you know what happens...

Same Problem

Hey i just joined the forums, i just bought this car a few days ago and had this occur.... it happened first when i was slowing down to a stop light,

ETS ABS - Break light - all come on and odometer stops working...

A few of my numbers arent working on my digital board in the center either.... and when i engage cruise no light comes on.... I was thinking/hoping i just need a new cluster to fix this problem....

When i restart the car everything works fine....

When i first got the car the cruise didnt work and the ETS light was on, so i replaced the break switch which was recomended on this board and my cruise started working... but as i said no cruise light came on....

then a few days later this started happening...

I am hoping its just the cluster that is bad... Which should be an easy fix... I know my AC controller (ECU) is broken as well... and is being repaired on tuesday.

I have a 2002 ml320 just replaced brake switch and lights are still coming on. No other issues other than lights on that I can see. My problem is intermitent. sometimes comes on when I start car and shuts off after driving for a while or shutting off and restarting. I can go for days with no lights then it acts up again. Anyone found a solution yet??

I have a 2001 ML430. It is driven infrequently. My problem is that when the car sits for a few weeks/months and it is then driven, the brakes engage without hitting the brake pedal making it almost impossible to drive. If and when the problem stops the ETS light goes on. I had the ETS sensor replaced by Mercedes, but the problem persists. Any idea what the problem and what the fix is.

same thing

just chiming in to say I have the same problem. My dealership was kind enough to replace my brake light switch under the open campaign recall in hopes of fixing, but now after a week lights back on. Drives fine.

They did note on the work order that the ABS/ EPS module may need replacing. I just don't want to start throwing parts at it to fix.

Okay... who's got an answer? I saw on another thread that the dealer may need to modify one of the three wires to the ABS? Can anyone give any creedance to this statement?

On Friday, Cabo Mercedes is going to replace the ETS sensor again at their cost, and pursuant to other replies I have had, they will also replace ABS pump relay in fuse box. I'll let you know if this works.

Replacing the ABS pump relay in the Fuse Box

I had the problem of the ABS sstem engaging and then fixing itself when the ETS/BAS light came on. Someone earlier on the forum suggested replacing the ABS Pump relay in the fuse box (look in the owner's manual). The dealer in Cabo replaced the relay and things are working alot better (the light does not come on and no braking problems yet). Unfortunately, I let the car sit between trips, so I won't be able to fully vet this fix until November.

As an aside, when I took the vehicle in (October 1st) about the ETS/BAS light coming on (even though they replaced the sensor in August), they replaced the relay and said they would order a new ETS/BAS sensor and replace at their cost. A week later when I went to have the sensor replaced, they said it was ok, but the computer indicated another sensor was malfunctioning (I need to have the name translated from Spanish) and needed to be replaced for $750. I told them to wait until my next trip. I'll let you what happens. Hopefully the replacement of the ABS pump relay fixes the problem.

You say when started everything is fine, well you are wrong if the CEL is lit. Have you ever had the codes pulled with a STAR system (Not a cheapie hand held). Thats where you must start and its going to cost you.

Brake Problem

The check engine light does not come on at any time when I run the vehicle. But you raise a good point, I will look to see if the code on the dealer recommendation documentation matches any of the thirty odd codes relating to CEL.

To all those that had the problem with the BAS/ESP, 4-ETS+, ABS, and Brake Light coming on, did you all ever find a DEFINITE solution to the problem? My mechanic has also replaced the brake light switch, but the problem is still there. Don't want to throw money into the wind. I'm a single mom, so any help would be appreciated.

Open Recall

Yesterday I called the part manager at the local (california) MB dealer asking about the cost of the "turnrate sensor" which the dealer in Cabo said needed replacing as the result of a computer scan (the part costs about $600). The manager said there is a recently opened recall for the brake light switch (#2011090001). He suggested not doing anything until the recall service is performed. It sounds like you have done this service, but if not you may want to get the service completed.

One of the things I did in September which really helped (but did not completely fix the problem) was to replace the ABS pump relay in the fuse box (at the suggestion of my earlier query). This is a relatively cheap replacement and can be done as one would change a fuse. After the dealer did this, my problems were significantly mitigated, although the BAS light would still occaisionally come on. I am going back in mid-November, and I am hoping not to have the earlier problems. I'll let you know what happens.

At the dealer

My lights seemed to come on when the car was a little wet; like just after it had rained and you took your foot off the gas coasting downhill... now it's doing it more often

Dealer just called and said there are codes for all four of my wheel speed sensors. Do I have 4 wheel speed sensors? If I check Pelican Parts, they list only 2 for the front.

They are also thinking my ESP controller is toast. E-bay has one for $416 from a salvaged 2000 ML430. Ugh!

E Bay is definitly not a credible source for Mercedes parts. Never heard of Pelican but doubt if they are credible. Yes there is a sensor on each wheel.
