Chrome Painting ML Grill

Has anyone tried this rather than paying $200 for a new Grill. I am very tempted to do this. Any thoughts or suggestions.

Thanks

I try to do it on my 03 ML but for some reason the top 2 rows is welded and I'm only able to take out the bottom row to painted. It's very simple as long as they are not welded like my is. The paint only cost me $3.00 and its a perfect match just like the ML55 Grill.

Any pics?

Was it the chrome spray paint that you used?
Does you have any pics of the newly painted grill?
I thought about painting the grill and strip under the grill, but thought it would look cheesy.

Are you saying you spray painted those grills, and then put the chrome strips on them?

Do you mind telling me what kind of spray paint you used, and the method you used to paint them.

I use the spray paint that simulate aluminum. Its for use with automotive and hardware. All I did is just take out the grill and give it a couple pass and eye ball to make sure the paint is even and let it dry for 2 days then I put it back on. The Paint its kind of soft still but after a week it finally harden.

yes

I bought the strips off ebay (I don't recomend that though, better go with formymercedes.com) after I had painted the grill. I painted it silver to match the color of the car (sanded, primed, painted, clear coated also notice I didn't painted the center of the star). The problem with the strips I got is that they do not follow the form of the grill and so I had to get some tougher double sided tape (3M) and remove the one that came with them. Also some of the strips on ebay tend to discolor with time and the price difference is not that much from the proper OEM strips. With grills you have two choices the ML500 (old ML55) grill -black with chrome strips or the new ML55 grill- silver (not brilliant silver like my car) and chrome strips.

If you really want to keep your project under $20 just paint the grill and buy some chrome tape, it is not the same, nor the tape will last as long, but it will get the look you want.

hope this helps...
