My ML has recently started making a whining noise at speeds > ~20 mph. Noise has gotten louder over the last couple days. Doesn't do it when stopped and revving motor or turning so seems to be tranny or maybe driveshaft related. No issues shifting. Mileage is right at 125,000 and have had no major service issues.

Any ideas on how to diagnose the issue? Are there any tests I can do to correctly identify and (hopefully) undertake a DIY effort. I'm a bit reluctant to just change the tranny fluid or replace the diff bearing in hopes that it addresses.

Have PS pump & PS reservoir checked checked.

mine does the same thing but whinning sound goes away when stopped and even when revving. it gets more noticeable with speed.
front differential issues?

It can be the center drive shaft bearing

U have to put it on the lift to check it

Edit: Circling back to confirm my issue was the center driveshaft bearing. There's a DIY thread for it which is good.
