DIY for Power Steering Pump Replacement?
Does anyone know a link to a DIY article for replacing the power steering pump? My 2003 ML350 has developed hard steering at idle that goes away once load is applied. The problem is traced to a weak PS pump, not a lack of sufficient fluid in the system.

I can almost guarantee you that it is not the P/S Pump. They do not go bad.
Is there any whining sound?

is it power steering???
Ok, i got a 2003 ml350, and i posted in another thread that the fluid is at the level and that the pump has no oil on it wich is a tell I've been told to a power steering pump going out. I also stated that it makes a noise, a whirring noise that i could hear while the car is in park and i turn the wheel. What i realized as i just went to the store was, that the whirring noise changes as im driving and i hear the gears change (as im accelerating for example). when the gears are changing up accelerating, the whirring noise follows that same pattern. the noise gets louder before ingaugeing and the level of the noise goes down a bit when the gear comes in, and does the same on every gear. whirrr up then slightly down, up again then slightly down.
I just received a reply as follow.....
If you are not having leaks with your power steering and it’s at the correct level, jack up your truck so the front wheels are in the air and turn the steering wheel from side to side with the truck off. Make sure the cap is off of the reservoir when doing this and it will let all the air out of the system. It helps if you have someone watch to see when it stops bubbling. This should get rid of the noise

i have a general question about the power steering fluid that is recommended for my ml350 about the choices if any when buying power steering fluid, do i have to start a new thread or is it ok to post here?
i know that the way these forums are structured are very important and i realized that when looking up information myself, and found myself loosing alot of time and at times even getting a little confused with some of the material put down by other guests.
