MAF sensor Dealer quoted me alot. Help

Hello there, this is my first post on this forum. Nice Forum!
Well yesterday I took my 00 ML320 to the dealership (walnut creek, CA) becuase it had the engine light on and also b service was due.
the service advisor calls me and tells me. it was $525 for the B service, $125 for checking what the light was on for. $525 to replace the MAF. and $225 for replacing a licking hose....
Im like damn! is this guy trying to charge me for what ever he can?
Any advise? should I try to bargain the price down...Need help please.
TIA

Hey, welcome man! Nice bimmer in the sig

$525 is right around what it costs the DEALER to have them replace the MAF. Seriously, you can do the job in 5-10 minutes yourself. It's unhooking two clamps, unplugging a electric plug and that's it. It's just a tube. Order it for around $250 or so and have it shipped to your house.

Look under your hood and follow the airbox up the tube. You'll see a "T" bone connector along the tube with a "plug" plugged into it. That's your MAF. There should be two clamps around it. Just undo those and the plug, voila, Take it off, put on the new one and your set. Saved yourself around $300 right there.

Now as far as the "licking" hose? I don't know what that is. Maybe someone else on here can advise. But yea, if this is your first MB, repairs can get costly

Welcome again man. You'll find it useful here!

I cleaned the MAF sensor on my 00 ML320 and it worked out very well for me...

I was told the same by the MB service center here in Rocklin CA. $525 for the MAF replacement.

Here's what I did to clean my MAF. Its been running fine since...

Yep, cleaning sometimes does revive it and it'll work for a little longer. But gotta be careful cleaning and make sure not to touch the sensor or you'll kill it. But worth a shot and try. If cleaning doesn't cure it, order a new one and DIY....save $300.

I had 71.3K on my clock when the MAF problem surfaced...

That's close....the same problem at around the same time. I have a 1995 Nissan Maxima with 154K on the clock and it hasn't had its MAF replaced ever....in it almost 9 years on the road.

Wonder what's wrong with these MLs???

It's not just ML's...it seems bosche MAF's die quicker or easier. But some people have had no problems what so ever. It's really case by case, not all ML's or all MB's in general.

Give the cleaning process a try then...........if you want to save some money for now. Seems to be working for some.

While you are doing the MAF...I suggest you check these too...

I suggest, you get these inspected too...

1. Catalytic Converters (CATs)
2. Oxygen Sensors

Mine had to be replaced at around the same time 71.3K...at which I faced the MAF problem.

In fact my CATs blew first and then the MAF problem surfaced.

California has an emissions warranty that will cover the CATs for up to 8 years/80000 miles. I was lucky to have hit them at 71K miles...they replaced mine at no charge.

Once you hit 80K...you will be on your own for these...

The CATs are a known problem on the 2000 MLs they just crack open - it costs big bucks to replace these - somewhere close to $2500...

SA was wrong. Page 23 of the Service and Warranty Information book states Emission Performance Warranty (Federal) is 8 years or 80,000 miles. Componets covered are on page 28. Page 33 states that California, Massachusetts & Vermont have more components covered for the first 7 years 70,000 miles due to more stringent pollution laws. Componets covered on page 40.
