Hi,
My ML350 currently has about 14k miles. I rarely use the tiptronic gear since I bought it, maybe few times! Anyway, over the wkend I have notice when I come to a stopping point from a high 4th gear to completely stop. It can't not automatically downshift to the 1st gear ! Is it a problem with my transmission ?
Because I also have a honda prelude 98 that also has the tiptronic gear option. It can automatically downshift from 4th to 1st when it come to a complete stop; and of couse to upshift from 1st to 4th gear we have to control it manually as usual.
Thanks for yours inputs .

Good point Nick,
I haven't tried that yet. I will test it out today.
If that is the case, MB is totally different w/ Honda , I guess !
The worst thing may happen to my trans then I will take it to dealer. The car is now 12.5 months old.

Danny, I believe you should be able to shift up and down the gears while stopped and while driving, I don't have an ML but I do have a CLK and that's how it works. Have the dealer check it out for you.
Sosh, if your going to boast about them, please spell their name correctly: Porsche.

Danny Hi. I tried the Tipfunction/Tiptronic on my way home last night.
Normally in "D" the gearbox can automatically select what gear is best suited for the driving condition. As soon as you use the Tipfunction/Tiptronic you immediately restrict the higest gear the gearbox can select. If you are in 4th and you select 3rd, the gearbox will drop down. If you are in 2nd, the gearbox will only be able to go to 3rd. The geardox is still in "automatic mode" all you have done is changed the highest gear.
When you come to a stop, the box should automatically go back to first, HOWEVER the gear number will not register on the display, as the display is only to show the Highest possible gear available.
If when you come to a complete stop the gearbox doesn't change back to first, and you try and pull away, the car will probably die on you or at least cough and splutter as you are in too high a gear, then you have a problem!
I hope this helps.
Nick.

Tiptronic MB and Porsche...
Not sure who owns the trade name 'Tiptronic' but the tiptronic transmission used by Porsche is made by MB. This fact might explain why I had to have my tiptronic transmission fail in my 996 at about 4,000 miles :-(
I now have a 911 TT with a stick shift - no more dodgy MB transmissions in my garage. Thats not to say there's anything wrong with a tip when it's working correctly.
