ML 320 (W163) oil indicator turns on and off on highway

Hey everybody,

I took my ML320 for a first ride on highway, driving 100km/h and after about 40 kms the oil indicator light turned on. I wanted to stop, but there was no upcoming exit, so had to continue. The light then turned off after a few kms, so I thought, all is good.
Then after so many kms, it turned back on again and off not long after.
It only does this while driving 'fast', it doesn't turn on while I drive around town.
The oil level is good, could it be the pump maybe or should I change oil and filter maybe?

Thanks for your precious help,

Cheers, Den

The oil light illuminates not only when the level is low, but also when the quality of the oil is low.
When was the last time you changed the oil?

I just bought it a few weeks ago. I didn't drive it that much yet, but I think I know what to do... Change oil and filter. Do you have any recommandation to which oil to use. I live in Melbourne Australia.
Thanks for your reply, btw...!

Cheers, Den

Sure do!! Use THIS, under the W163 forum

EDIT: btw, just because you just bought this a few weeks ago, doesn't mean he seller did an oil n filter change for you. NEVER assume the basics were done, unless the seller can provide you with invoicing to prove otherwise.

That always works.
Alternatively, many members (with these high mileage suvs) use synthetic oil. Imho, it's a personal choice.

Have fun with your newly acquired W163.

Ah OK, good to know. Though mine has only 150.000 (real) kms. But yeah, why not going synthetic, only the best for my ML 😁

Mine did the same thing a couple of months ago. I thought the oil level sensor was screwed, but apparently not - the oil level was low and topped up about half a litre and it's been good ever since...
