It could be too much car wax fumes but I swear my stock air filter gives me better performance than my K&N filter?! With the K&N acceleration feels slugish compared with the stock filter. Am I imagining
things or has anyone else noticed this?

k&n is as if there is no air filter there, but with good filtration. that wouldnt make much sense, then again, did you test the gas mileage?

I put 3000 miles on my K&N...
On a road trip I put 3000 miles using the K&N and got 20-21 on freeway. This weekend I will put 600 using the stock filter. I'll post the results.

skyfreedom,
Have you had any issues with the MAF sensor going bad due to the K&N? I bought a K&N air filter on a whim, but then read all these bad things about putting into the ML. So I have a brand new air filter sitting around the apartment, wondering if it can be used, hehe

BTW, my car is past its 4 year warranty... (2000 ML430)

K&N
We used to have an 850i with 2 K&N's. there were a number of tests done by forum members including a dino test. It showed 3% loss in power. That's probably within experimental error.
Watch out for over oiling when you maintain the filter. You can take out a mass airflow sensor...

Just got back from roadtrip...
Have you had any issues with the MAF sensor going bad due to the K&N? Nope, as long as you dont over oil it, like dlynch said.
Just got back from my roadtrip. The car ran like a rapped ape, no problems at all, but I did notice that my gas mileage was lower by using the stock filter, at around 18-19.
Same weight, same variables AC ON, Accel to pass...

While driving
to get some
Starbucks coffee this morning the "Check Engine" light came on. The ML is now at the shop getting a new O2 sensor.
The computer showed 6 misfires on one cylinder then the alarm for the O2 sensor came on.
I think that performance problem could have been because my O2 sensor was going bad. I'll have to check when its all fixed.

Is the K&N drop in filter the one people usually go with on ther ML's? Or Is there another filter kit that someone makes for the car that isnt an arm n a leg?
