Question ML350 replacement tires

I am looking at tire choices for a 2004 ML350. I see no good tires available at all in 255/60-17. No Michelin, no Continental, no Bridgestone. All I see is crap like Hankook and Kumho. EVerything else is "sold out". Is this the sad state of supply shortages still not resolved or am I missing something? Is there an alternative size I should be looking for? Thanks!

Don't know where you are located, but here in SE Texas there are a number of choices available. You can run 275/55R17 on the ML350 as well as the 255/60R17.. (!) = my top choices.
Continental 4x4 Contact (!)
Nitto NT421Q (!)
General Grabber UHP
General GMax AS-07 (!)
Toyo Proxes STIII
Hankook DynaPro HP2

Those tires sizes are getting hard to find regardless of manufacturer. Have you tried TireRack.com?

I would not be afraid to use Hankook tires. They might not be Michelins, but we had at least one set on our 2005 ML350. They preformed well on wet or dry streets and lasted 40,000 miles,

+1 on the 255/60/17 being an odd size. The last time I bought tires (2021) for the ML I was able to get the Bridgestone Dueler Alenza from Costco. Bridgestone no longer shows any tires for the ML with 255/60/17's!!

Consider these Yokahoma's maybe?

Also, you might consider 275/55/17's. I had them on the ML for a while, made it look like it never skipped leg day.

245/65-17

245/65-17 seems to be a better stocked size. Has anyone used this size? I see all kinds of good choices in this size.

245/65/R17 standard load rating is 107. XL is 110. The 275/55R17 on our ML was 109. The 245 sidewall is about ¼ inch taller, so probably will fit. But maybe you should check with the tire shop on clearance and load range just to be safe.

I have run 245/65-17 Michelin Defender LTX M/S for two years now. Great tire, speedo is very close to right. If you think you can't get enough grip with that size, come take a ride. Consider my background - 5 miatas, only one with the Hardcore double diagonal rollbar...

About 2-1/2 years ago I got a set of the Yokohama AT's for my Ford F150 4x4. they have done so well that when I was given the ML320 the tires were at and over 10 years old per date code , tread was better than 1/2 showing but weather checked even between the tread grooves. I went back to my local INDIE shop and got the Yokohama HT 255 65 16 109T. 689.00 installed for 4 ,of course they are smooth and quiet but most tires are at less than 100 miles.
The AT's on the Ford have crawled all over these mountains diggin out wood to cut buck and haul home and a fair amount od local and hwy miles too. I have been dealing with these Kat's for 14 years now. They even mount and balance my MC tires 2 for 15.00 they are a great 3 generation family operation and give everyone great service and pricing. I trust them and when they say Yokohama,,, I say how much and "Get-er-Done. Good luck with your shopping.

Good point to check on the load rating. TireRack offers 106 for ML350 with 255/60-17 sizes.
