Needed to buy some oil...this ok?

ML is down about 1.5 reported by the cluster. Checked manually and it was down to "min" point.

Just bought some Mobil 1 SuperSyn 0w-40...this is ok? Says European Forumla on the bottle and it was expensive...$4.89 / quart.

Mobil 1

I like to use Mobil1 very good choice, also I like Castrol oil to. Just performed an oil change on a 96 S600 can you believe the car took almost 11 guarts of oil. Just think at $5.00 per qt plus the filter adds up to an expensive oil change.

The mobil 1 0w40 is exactly what we use at the dealership. Mobil 1 is factory fill.... You got the right oil!

Pep Boys is selling a calender for a buck that has coupons for various items in their stores. One is for three free quarts of any weight of Mobil 1 synthetic oil when you buy three quarts...currently $4.99 @ quart. Do the math....you're getting each quart for $2.50....best price anywhere!!

Unfortunately, Pep Boys does not sell the 0W40 I use in my ML, but they do sell the 15W30, I use in my wifes' 320S.....If you run any of the Mobil 1 oils other than the 0W40, you can save a few bucks by getting the calender

awsome, thanks guys!

ohh, btw...I added the oil, 1/2 Qt as it was not quite all the way down to the min level...but the half quart I put in got it back between the min and max (normal).

Now, I check it VIA the instrument cluster afterwards, it reported BEFORE adding in the oil that it was -1.5L...now it's -1.0L. Should I trust the readout from the cluster? The dipstick tells me it's enough but the cluster says otherwise...

Yes you can trust it as long as the truck is parked on a level surface.... -1.0L means you are still low... just add the other half quart of oil and you should be ok.

yep, it's in the garage and it's pretty leveled. I'll throw in the other half quart and check it out. Thanks!

you should be using the 0W-40 anyway. Factory fill and reccomended. Good pick!

threw in the other half quart and when I checked in the instrument cluster, it wouldn't give a reading when i pressed the button twice. I'm assuming that tells me it's the correct level now and the dipstick does confirm. Looks good

If it just reads dashes then you haven't waited long enough after engine shut off for it to measure. Also it would not surprise me if the oil level sensor is faulty.... I have only replaced a few thousand of those

last night when I did the check, I did it about 5 minutes after I shut off the engine and it reported back that it was -1.5L...same today, I parked it, went inside todo a few things and came back out...maybe 10 minutes? And it just read dashes...

when it shows the dashes you have to push the button quickly two times to get the oil level reading.

yup, I know. Maybe it didn't catch it (cluster doesn't seem that solid )

but I just did it and it says:

Oil .0 except before the . there's a vertical line, half the length of the letter l...so I'm guessing the level is fine?
