Rear Skid Plates
I feel a little foolish asking but I'm not sure about this and need your help. When I open the rear hatch to the ML there are two metal looking plates on the platform on either side of the latch. These things are blue and it looks like the type of film you see on new pieces of metal trim on appliances, etc. My question is, are these things really blue metal or is this a protective covering? I don't want to try to peel them off if it's actually the color of the metal. Anyone familiar with the situation? Thanks in advance.

It's just a protective film that should have been removed by the dealer during delivery preparation. Two points off on the customer survey for them. . .
That film actually comes on the sheet stock from which the parts are made to protect it during stamping, cutting, and installation. You may find that it wraps around the edges of the plates making it difficult to get the last little bits off where the metal meets the plastic.

FD, I thought it was a film but it's tucked under so well I wasn't sure. I'll have the dealer pull it off when I go for my first service. Thanks for the info.

Before pulling the inside one off, you may want to reconsider as the chrome piece gets scratched up pretty darn easily!

Love this ride
I think you're right. I'll leave it on sill it starts wearing off and then peel it off and have a brand new look for a while. One of the bitter sweet things about owning a new car is wanting to keep it in perfect condition forever but knowing it's a loosing battle. I'll never stop worrying about when the first scratch or ding is comming. Hopefully it will happen gradually and age with beauty. Also hope I won't wear out the finish by washing it every weekend. I think I'm in love

I'm glad to read I'm not the only one.
I drove my GL for about 7 months before I realized the interior strip was covered with protective film.
