Haven't heard a thing on my end. If you hear more could you keep us posted. Usually there is a letter mailed, so I will watch for it.

There is a current recall on 06-08 ML/GL with tow package. MB stresses to cease use of hitch until repaired. Recall only takes about an hour.

New details

I checked with my Service advisor on this one.

He said, that only some of the ML's with the tow package would require the recall but they have to be inspected.

He also mumbled something about needing a Certified Welder to fix the problem.

Yes, "certified welder" is not something most MB dealers have on their payroll.

Logistics of this recall will therefore be a bit complicated.

I wonder if they have to take out the whole hitch assembly or just simply re-weld it because it's not welded properly....

I just took my GL in, and was told this recall will be performed. More info here: https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...41#post2882441. This is a serious issue and you should not tow until it is resolved. Many of us purchased GL or ML to tow, and this is just unbelievable that MB would get something so basic wrong. Hopefully not a sign of more issues to come..... <sigh>

Are you using a certified welder or is the franchise taking on the liability it self for the work? If you use a certified welder he hold the liability but MB's plan does not allow for liability to be transfered out of the dealership if its done in house by a tech. It requires a whole different insurance policy.

MB seems to have done pretty poorly crafting this recall. Thoughts?

Dealer installed?

Tee The hitch on my 2008 ML350 was dealer installed before I took delivery, It has the hitch option on my sales order, but the window sticker didn't have the hitch on it. I can only think I will not be getting notified of the recall, As far as I was told, the hitch was MB Original, out of the parts Dept. and installed by the service Dept. Will the recall apply? and are the hitches that the parts Dept. supplied also involved?

Yes your hitch is involved in the recall but you will not get a letter go to your dealer they need to contact mbz for an ok to do the repair .I have already done some that were dealer installed. all the hitches from the parts dept need this mod also.

Thank you for your reply, I will call my SA, as I understand, the recall requires some welding to be done on the hitch, what is used to stop the welded area from rusting? paint?

Thank you Tee, hopefully all of the welders will use the primer, paint, and wax. I would hate to see rust.

What exactly is done to the hitch?
I checked mine out and a couple of the welds look thin.
Are they adding bracing or just thickening the welds?

The hitches are not welded on the front or rear of the receiver just the top and the bottom

Only the receiver?

Tee-
You mentioned that you only add weld to the front and rear of the receiver. I crawled under my car and it looks like the plates that attach the receiver to the cross tube are only welded on one side. Do you add any weld here?
Thanks,
Tim

Well, got my notice, and after looking at my hitch, I see more areas where welding is needed other than where Tee mentioned. I think I will unbolt the hitch and take it to the welder that did the roll cage in my race car.
Thank goodness I haven't towed as yet. The construction is really poor.
I personally feel more comfortable with a welder that does only welding, than my dealers "guy" in the body shop!

Let us know how you made out with unbolting the hitch.

I am not trying to start a war over welding, but from an engineering viewpoint it is not always necessary to have continuously welded joints or welds at every possible point to meet the specs or other requirements of a component. Based on what I was told about dealer installation of one of these hitches, it won't be a simple unbolting job. If you do get it off, be sure to get new mounting bolts from MB when you reinstall as they are one time only design!

I had mine in for the recall last week and the dealer had their body shop do the work. I've looked it over very carefully as I tow a large boat trailer and a 7x14 utility trailer. I was very impressed with the welding job their body shop did it is very clean and thorough.

My cousin owns a welding a fabrication shop in PA so I've had the experience of seeing a good weld job vs. a bad one. I would have had him do the work, but I live seven hours away and the dealer was more convenient.

If you are worried about the dealer having the experience or skills on sight ask them to see one they have already completed. Even if you are not sure what to look for compare it against the already existing factory welds.
