I agree with you that the V8 may become an outlaw soon, due to the gas prices. Personally I am very happy with, and enjoy, my option to buy a V8.
And when the cars will run on AA batteries, a V8 may gain an added vintage value...
Also dealers are very skillful to use every bargaining reason available to lower the trade-in value for a model like ours, based on promotional stereotypes. But I am sure that if you'll go to inquire about buying a used V8 ML, they will serve same reversed reasons to ask for a higher price than for a comparable similar V6.
